I was searching for something very Sri Lankan to eat and my channel partner suggested to try LAMPRAIS.It is a combination of herbed and spiced rice with chicken, fish, egg and vegetables all wrapped in a banana leafI had my best LAMPRAIS in this restaurant and will go there again and again for this delicious offering which packs a punch
As I have mentioned in a previous post, I might have a bit of a soft spot for VOC Café’s Chicken Lumprais (LKR 545). Leave aside the fact that the staff can sometimes be a bit unreliable and lost with orders. There’s something about this lumprais that feels nice. I’m not sure if it’s my mind toying with the fact that there is some sort of direct Dutch influence at DBU, or whether it’s simply because I enjoy the simplicity of the presentation and taste of it. I’ve read a few reviews in the past that suggest a decline in the standards of VOC’s lumprais. So far for me – at least since I first tried it over a year ago – the taste and quality have been quite consistent. It would be a good idea to increase the quantity of packets they make though (as long as they don’t compromise on quality) since it’s impossible to get some unless you reserve in advance!
As much as I love DBU i must say that their Southern chicken burger is an abomination. The patty is dry and it is loaded with onions. I couldn’t eat it as it was extremely gross
Visited on a Friday night and had fish and chips which was fairly alright. I’ve heard their Sri Lankan dishes are amazing especially with pork curries. However since I do not eat pork I’m assuming the other reviews would have done justice to its signature. Their home made ginger beer is a must try and tastes amazing. This gives you a different perspective for the common egb. Ambience is quite delightful since it is set up in a traditional Sri lankan walawwa like house that has been transformed to serve the purpose. Eventhough food didn’t take a long time to be served the waiters could be more proactive in providing the proper menus when requested.
