About
On the eve of the national elections in Thailand two friends and I found ourselves roaming the streets of Bangkok, desperate to find a restaurant still open at 11pm despite the official interdiction to serve alcohols to patrons A very archaic law in Thailand thats supposed to ensure people will turn up at the poll stations the next day We were told by a local to try the restaurant at the Montien hotel on Surawongse, literally opposite the famous Patpong street First look at the hotel lobby and the restaurant was not promising. Old-fashioned furniture, white and charmless ceiling lamps, light blue table tops, an ode to bad taste really It was 11pm, we were hungry and tired, so we gave it a go And did not regret it The food we ordered was typically Thai: duck red curry, papaya salad, spring rolls, pad thai, etc. Everything was absolutely cooked to perfection. The duck curry was to die for, maybe the best I ever had. The pad thai was served in the traditional way (the eggs prepared omelette-style and covering the noodles underneath), and the papaya salad, albeit a tad too spicy was perfectly prepared. The three of us agreed that this was maybe one of the best Thai meals we ever had; if it was only me saying it, maybe you could question it since my point of reference is the somewhat bland Thai food you get served in Europe; my friends however live in Singapore and have had their share of Thai food for the past few years So if they say it was great, I am happy to say it too Which shows that all the glamour of the dcor doesnt always make up for the quality for the food on the plate, and vice versa Dont judge a restaurant by the colour of the napkins or the unpleasantness of the staff reserve your judgement until you get your food Golden rule for the Montien Because at the price they charge, for the size of portions they serve, not getting a smile from the waiters is perfectly acceptable I wish I could go back right now! And they are open 24/7 which is GREAT!
