Samasam is a one of the several tiny restaurants owned by folks originally from Kerala. This place is another one of those joints I’ve dined at many a time because it’s quite close to where I stay. There’s nothing in terms of ambiance or ‘service’ here – it caters to mainly the lower income groups who are in need for some low-cost food that fills you up. Sometimes it’s difficult to sit because the tables and chairs are so close and sitting back-to-back can become a bit of a problem if you’re of a slightly larger build. The food here includes the rice meals plate consisting of par boiled rice (or red rice as we call it in India) along with different vegetables and some gravy and curry. There’s also a fried fish (usually mackerel) given with this. This meal is quite filling and you can ask for as many helpings of rice as you want. It’s a hearty meal and provides you with everything you need in terms of a meal. Apart from this, they have the usual Kerala parotta, or KP, along with a range of chicken and beef dishes. The beef roast is the usual favourite to pair along with the KP, but once in a while, ask for the chicken curry or chicken chukka, they’re quite nice as well. For dinner, they also make appams (rice crepes that are thick and fluffy in the middle and thin and crispy along the edges). The appams here aren’t the best in terms of appearance. They are made using the regular dosa pan, and not the special appam pan. Nevertheless, it suffices to help you scoop up your curry. It’s best to ask them what are the curries available on any given day as they don’t have a printed menu. Worth a visit only if you’re in the area and are craving for some unpretentious Malabar food. gastronomicalgspot.blogspot.com
