I said i was hungry and he said he wants to try Russian food, which i was skeptical, and fantastic rolls. Plus wonderful sliders. And he stopped at an oblivious place, so far from the city. So again: WHERE ARE WE?It was a small corner shop at far off Mussafah, near that far off Delma Mall (which for the love of me i havent been to all these years), just one table and a counter, the other half is a place of storage boxes and the farthest end is a tiny kitchen. It opened up with faces of people who seems to be loving what they do – a smile, a hand shake, those eyes happy to see a stranger who seems lost and hungry.Mr. Babu, the owner, is quick to welcome me and my friend and gave us the only seats available in this delivery only restaurant. I asked the very obvious question: why Russian? I am not aware that there is a market for this food. Let alone i am ignorant of this cuisine. So he explained that there are a LOT of craving for this, and that their kitchen is busy with their popular beetroot salad with herring. And the dumplings.Their menu isnt that many pages – WHICH I LOVE. A starting up restaurant doesnt need to be so braggy about having a book full of food, they need a few that they can do well. And boy, Babu amd his minions can do theirs the BEST.I seriously am not so excited with the Japanese rolls – i thought i had tasted every one of them here in the capital but hey wait, deep fried? Hmm so yes please! And that added batter crunch on that well prepped sushi rice on that nori hugging that well-proportioned crab sticks and avo is just perfect play of textures. The deep fried shrimp roll is equally fantastic – the shrimp is well cooked, not rubbery at all.My first time Russian meal came and im seriously happy on how they look – i eat with my eyes, you know. Their dumplings (Pelmeni as locals call them) looks like the usual Chinese steamed pot stickets or that Italian capalletti. These are boiled, and best eaten hot. What made it soo unique for a first timer me is that you dunk it in cream and it seriously is made better. The dough itself covering that perfect fit-in-your mouth meatballs are perfectly seasoned and kept juicy in that tiny wrap. I could eat a whole bowlful of itFor me, the muse of my dinner was their shuba or their Russian salad. It looked like an English trifle to me before if it was a dessert: colorful layers of veggies here – that bright red beetroot, mashed potato and herring. Excuse me, a what? Yes, the fish herring. I have not tried herring in a salad before as its usually salmon (or anchovies) but herring. And yes, take my money i am vouching for this gorgeous salad!And as if i am craving for more, we had sliders on potato bun – and their crispy chicken on a bed of crisp lettuce, tomato and just enough sauce to not overpower that chicken IS seriously great. And ine sliced pineapple there made it juicier. Not a burger person here, but hey, i adored this one.At the moment, they are exclusively for delivery only capital-wide. Their serving portions is seriously great for sharing and for that price its worth every fil.And the one more MOST important thing that made their food absolutely great? I told you about that tiny kitchen, right? Its seriously was amazing to see how they ‘dance’ on its floor – in perfect synchrony on a busy delivery night that even the Boss has his hands full. It was GREAT teamwork, and it shows in their food: full of love on their work, their dedication to give the best in their aim to give us that happiness i seriously had when i left.
