Ultimately, it’s the broth that makes or breaks a hotpot, and I wasn’t a fan of the broth from the outset. Had to add a bunch of condiments to make it taste good. We ordered a squid sizzler that was the star of the evening. It came with enoki mushrooms, covered in a glorious sticky sauce. Skip the forgetable hotpot, have the squid.

Sooo we found ourselves at Al Attar having to buy some knick knacks for the mobile. And boy was that place like taking a trip down the rabbit’s hole. And so how could dinner not be an adventure too?We found ourselves drawn to this restaurant and asked for shabu shabu or the hotpot, which i have been wanting to try for a really long time. The hotpot came with an assortment of ingredients like chicken and meat, prawns, fish balls, squid, tofu, mushroom, spinach, seaweed and vermicelli noodles. The waitress was sweet and helped us prepare the hotpot. The soup base was peanut sauce that admittedly had us a little worried because we just couldn’t wrap our tiny unimaginative brains around peanut soup with seafood and chicken. What we got at the end of staring excitedly at the pot bubble was a tasty light broth and thankfully the peanut flavour did not overpower. There is a table kept aside laden with condiments and sauces so a few dollops of garlic paste, chilli sauce and fresh coriander elevates the broth even more.We had the hotpot which was intended as a serving size for 2 people, but it could easily be had by 3 or 4 people so great value for money there. We also had their tofu stir fry with pepper, which was okayish. But the other star of the show was their noodles, which we were informed was handmade fresh by them. It had a great chewy silky texture and paired well with the chilli sauce it was made in. Like a heavenly marriage of flavours.I don’t know if they have desserts because we were too full to even ask. This unassuming restaurant won our hearts and our tummies. So if you find yourself walking past Al Attar, drop in for the hotpot and stay for the noodles.
