Omer al Khayyam is an RAK institution just like Moonlight restaurant or Lebanese House restaurant. It’s located on the Shk Mohammed bin Salem road opposite to the RAK BANK branch and next door to RAK Palace. This restaurant used to be jam packed in the 80s. There used to hardly be a seat available on Friday afternoons. Restaurant specialises in Arabic food with a bit of Indian and Iranian thrown in there. The locals used to throng in there to eat the famous biriyani especially prepared in the Arabic style.I used to pop in there for lunch once a month or so when I used to work nearby and didn’t have the time to go home for lunch while busy trying to finish projects on time.I usually order the mixed grill with Iranian bread which they usually serve with a plate of green salad and hummus. These are Iranian style kebabs with the sultani kebab and saffron flavoured chicken. When I was a child I used to think the kebabs were amazing but now they don’t really match the flavour and standards of a place say like Sadaf restaurant but they are still pretty ok. Prices of course are still a lot cheaper than Sadaf restaurant. I am not a huge fan of eating loads of rice at lunch so I rarely choose the rice option but if you like your rice and meat or rice and fish then there are lots of options for you. It looks as if the restaurant still has lots of regulars who still keep coming here even after decades.Restaurant is quite big with loads of seating area and a family section. Service is quick and efficient while the food is nice and hot.Overall this restaurant doesn’t hit the heights it used to in the 80s but the food is still good.
