I’ve always had excellent food and wine here. I went again on Thursday after not being here for a while and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a very roomy venue – literally – with lots of different rooms and space, including two outside areas at the front and back. It’s a perfect Venue either for just drinks or dinner. I had the pan fried grey mullet with celeriac Risotto this time. The fish was excellent and the risotto perfectly seasoned. My only grumble would be that I would have preferred a bigger piece of fish and less Risotto, but the dish as a whole was very filling. My friend had pan fried plaice on a bed of chorizo, chickpeas and tomato sauce. Hers was a larger fish with just the right amount of chorizo and again she really liked it and was looking forward to having it again another time. The waiter was really efficient, courteous and friendly too. The main course took a while to arrive despite it not being that busy, but we didn’t mind much. It was the least busy I’ve seen it as I’ve always been at the weekend previously when it’s very popular and it always has a good, fairly chilled out atmosphere. I’ve been put off by a slightly musty smell inside the dining room before, but no such smell this time! We didn’t really need dessert, because the main courses were filling. However, I couldn’t resist the chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream and raspberry coulis. The brownie was hot and contrasted perfectly with the ice cream and coulis. This is an excellent, well cooked dessert and one to recommend. The wine was very good as usual despite ordering the cheapest Spanish Abilius Blanco this time. I can’t wait to go for dinner here again!
Great atmosphere, lovely stuff and very good food. Portions aren’t huge but very good lamb, amazing truffle mash with wild boar sausages, great chicken breast starter.
Great atmos and lovely home style cooking. Service is good but the wait can be a little long particularly on a Sunday.
A fantastic bar; great atmosphere, drinks and bar snacks. Unfortunately the new restaurant is disappointing, the tapas was luke warm and tasteless, its a shame they’ve given over so much space to it. My advice would be stick to the sausage rolls sold at the bar – delicious!
And now they do food…. Best bar in Balham, finally does food.Unfortunately not as well as you might expect. Their sister restaurant/bar The Antelope is pretty good, this is disappointing – food wise.Ribeye steak – ok cut served with a salad of pears, walnuts and watercress plus slathered in anchovy Mayo. How about some chips? Nope, mash or Potatas Bravas (hope you like Mayo).Cholcolate Fondant -average with a strange caramalised (grapefruit? not sure) sauce.Adventurous, yes. successful. No.Why not just keep it simple?
Quirky and fun. Good place to hang out , makes a change from identikit chain bars. Food is mostly good , and between 6-7pm they bring out great sausage rolls for 1
