Perfect Local Pizza. I am not a huge fan of pizza but my BF recently invited me over to her postcode for dinner and we went to this local pizzeria that had recently opened. Clean, comfortable and VERY tasty pizza. Thin, home-made crusts and generous fresh toppings with no innocuous cheese or tomato sauces in site. Leaving a large bottle of chilli oil so we could pour to our heart’s content was a nice touch. Great coffee and pleasant staff. Luckily, they also do takeaway, as I can see this small but perfectly formed eatery getting very busy, very soon!
The place to be in Balham. Went to this restaurant on valentines night it was wonderful, the food was great as was the service. Visited again with my kids on Saturday afternoon and found that it was so kid friendly with a giant chalk board to keep the children happy. Very reasonably priced as well
Curate’s Egg. We went to this restaurant last week. You can’t book, which is quite a cynical move to make you drink at the admittedly attractive bar until a table is free. (we could have left but the weather was bad). Nice atmosphere. Poor service, no water offered, truly awful old fashioned aubergine dish but at least the pizzas were good (in the middle). Don’t think families will bother as too few big tables + no booking. But assume that’s not the target market as pretty expensive (12 plus for pizzas).
LONDONS BEST RESTAURANT AND BAR. I have to agree with Paul this is the best place in London to eat pizza.I love the bar vibe and the staff are all friendly, I was also a regular of double espresso and remember that they also closed on a Monday as well as early on a Sunday. The people of Balham need to forget about the old business and welcome the great Honest Italian, who seems to have got it just right in being fantastic at one thing- the best ever pizza in London
Best Pizza in London. The Honest Italian arose from the ashes of Double Espresso which closed when the partners in the restaurant went their seperate ways. The pizza genius of the two moved on and re-branded as The Honest Italian, a restaurant dedicated to wood oven pizza. For the diehard Double Espresso clientele the previously large range of good food will be missed. Gone are the well portioned and tasty pasta dishes and the staple burgers and snacks. There is also a more limited opening schedule. Closed on Monday, you will find regular evening hours the rest of the week with extended hours at the weekend. This could be a mistake. My last visit was on a Monday. It was closed. I was forced to take refuge in another Italian restaurant down the road. It was packed, and having previously served dry over salted pizza’s, had upped it’s game in the light of competition, charging on average 3.50 less for a quality product. They also had the choice of other traditional Italian dishes.Steve the owner of The Honest Italian is passionate about his Pizza, and if you prefer your pizza light, thin and crisp, cooked to perfection, this is your place. The night I was in, there was one complaint from a group of inebriated ‘theatrical’ men who felt short changed at paying an extra pound for sharing a dessert. Steve was mortified at this explaining that the guests wanted to share an ice cream and were charged for the extra scoops required. He then proceeded to offer free drinks in compensation for the display. In short, The Honest Italian is the best Pizza in Balham if not London, but if like me you were a regular to Double Espresso, you may find yourself missing the range of other great dishes and the seven day a week opening schedule.
Lovely :). I went here the other night with my boyfriend and sat in a cute little ‘love seat’ hidden round the side of the bar! We had a pizza and a salad and thoroughly enjoyed both. We’ll be back!
The Dishonest Italian !!. Myself and three friends decided to try this new wood fired Pizzeria in our neighbourhood . I ordered the Funghi Pizza which came with a distinct lack of its headline filling – mushrooms . The middle was fine but the edges consisted mostly of tomatoes and dough and was quite dry . My friend who had the lasagne said it was far to heavy with tomatoes and not much else besides some mince . Our biggest shock of the night is when my friend and I decided to share an ice cream and asked for an extra spoon ,which literally came at a price . The Manager had actually made an extra charge on the bill of a 1 for the teaspoon !!! We couldnt believe it and when we questioned this charge he decided to remove it as he could see we were very unhappy . To do such an act in such an underhanded way ( no mention by the waiter or it being stated on the menu an extra charge would be made) was beyond belief . Clearly this restaurant has a lot to learn about its honesty and integrity and making a good impression with the locals having only been open for 6 weeks . We left very angry and will not be returning . The Honest Italian it is not !
