We were very lucky to be driving past the Idly Dosa restaurant the other night looking for something cheap and cheerful. This really hit the mark. The waiters are friendly and reasonably efficient. The food is pretty darned good for the price. I don’t think they’d win prizes as master chefs, but they turn out tasty food with good ingredients.Be careful not to over order as we did. The prices are deceptive, they do not give you micro-meals.We each ordered a starter and a very cheap main – so cheap that we thought they were all side dishes and ordered an aubergine curry to share – we took this home and are having it for dinner tonight.I had the fish cutlets which are really, really tasty and fish and chip shops could do well to chuck out their fishcake recipes and serve these instead. Hubby had the rather hot, but tasty Rasam soup. Good for clearing out blocked sinuses – but not so hot you can’t taste the spices.I had the Paper Dosa dish for my main – the three sauces with this are lovely, especially the strangely orange coloured one with a familiar flavour that I couldn’t identify. The paper dosa a little too thin to be able to dip easily, but they go for the eye-stretching size of these, rather than ease of eating.Hubby had Idly Sambar. Fantastic. Topped off with a couple of cups of masala tea, which is the proper stuff and not some strained version. You might need a tooth-pick afterwards. We were there early due to travelling schedule but already there were a few locals in there. Not over crowded, but nice atmosphere. The whole meal cost around 15 for the two of us. Would have been much less if we had left off the curry. As long as you’re prepared to forgive some quirkiness and small failings, and a not great loo, I’d heartily recommend this restaurant or have your meal delivered if you are local. Well worth a try.
