Found the place by accident which often proves to be the best way and this occasion was no exception. As you walk in the staff greet you with such warmth you immediately feel at home. The atmosphere is pleasant and is devoid of the kind of pretence you might get with similar establishments. The food is excellent along with the choice of wines and the staff are very knowledgeable of the food and wine available, the proof for me being the excellent recommendations that were made. All in all I know I will definitely be going back to this establishment.
Over the last few years, the London dining scene has exploded and matured at an exceptional rate to the point where now, eating out well is affordable enough to no longer be considered a luxury. In my opinion, few places embody this novelty better than 40 Maltby Street. Simple, sophisticated and satisfying are but just a few of 40 Maltby Street’s calling cards as they go about quietly serving refined dishes of the highest quality in their converted railway arch in the heart of Bermondsey with a wine selection that is the envy of any institution; period. Settling in for a light Sunday brunch, we worked our way through plates of:- the nettle and goats curd turnover;- pea fritters, spring onion and mint; and- crumbed lamb’s sweetbreads with baby artichoke and aioli. Each dish was tantalising to the taste and showed supreme respect to the natural flavours of the ingredients. The pea fritters were a pure delight with the natural sugars of the peas coming through vivid and vibrant but it was the sweetbreads which were the overriding highlight; every little nugget was a bite of rich indulgence. For a refined a night out, Bermondsey may not be the first thought that comes to mind but change that now; 40 Maltby Street is a force to be reckoned with.
