AMBIENCE 4.0Nice Italian / European feel – lots of light – try to get the mid level – not the lower or uppermost. DRINK 3.0Draught beer – decent but nothing great. Home made lemonade was pretty good FOOD 4.0Bruschetta – possibly the best I have ever had anywhere in the world, soft creamy cheese :-)Italian Nachos – kids liked them, but I couldn’t stand the taste3 Cheese caramel – very good. Ricattori Pomodoro – average Superfood Salad – not very good Chicken Puttanesca – the description on the menu sounded very good, but the dish was way below expectations – raw chicken taste :-(DESSERT 4.5Epic Brownie – as good as you would expect – very decent Molten Chocolate Praline Pudding – awesomeOrange Blossom Polenta Cake -really good SERVICE 3.0Slow. Be ready to wait for hours for your food to arrive. You have to call out for people when you need sown thing. Generally friendly staff though. If you’re in a hurry, this may not be for you. Overall, this is definitely one of the better places to eat at, at York. Not a place you will regret going to unless you wanted to get done very quickly and continue expiring York – in which case Fast Food places like McDonalds would be the only option.
Lunch Saturday Nov 1st 2014. Cracking building and a great setting – light and airy and nicely turned out inside. Booked a table for 4 for lunch. 5 members of staff chatting at the reception desk and no-one serving at the bar. A lass did come to serve us – drowned the Gin and Tonic, gave short measure on a Campari and Soda (25ml) and served 2 glasses of wine from a cardboard box! Not her fault – it was clear she’d not been trained.Similar theme throughout – non of the serving staff appeared to have any training at all – orders were wrongly taken, appetisers were served halfway through the main course, staff insisted on calling us ‘guys’ – felt more like a ‘themed dining experience’ than a restaurant!! – very false and very contrived. The only Giant Plank I saw was the overbearing imbecile who served a selection of meats, olives and breads on a piece of wood balanced unceremoniously on two catering size tins of tomatoes in the middle of the table and insisted on rattling off in detail a description of all that was set before us! Total gimmick and utterly nauseating – overheard the same spiel twice more as other dinners were served the Giant Plank experience! So, what was the food like? not bad, but not good either, certainly nothing to write home about – I had the calves liver with mashed potato and onion gravy. The liver was good though somewhat underdone – any vet worth his salt could’ve brought it back to life, the mashed potato bland and watery and the onion gravy thin. The fried sage leaf garnish was very good but the deep fried cauliflower florets were too wet turning the batter soggy. The Giant Plank I’m told was OK and the chicken pleasant but very ordinary. The serving staff were very pleasant but lacked any form of guidance or training giving an air of shambolic incompetence – only exceptionally well trained staff can appear casual and yet deliver excellent customer service to paying customers – at Jamie’s Italian the staffs lack of training translates to poor customer service, which is a shame. I certainly would not rush back – there are far better eateries in York to be enjoyed!
