A rather disappointing jaunt to Cau (pronounced Cow) in Blackheath, it should have been a lot swisher in service & food quality. The menu is extensive but dining with a few Cau veterans made the choosing process a lot easier and we narrowed our choices down quite easily. A large number of us opted for the Choripan sandwich which was well cooked, although could have done with a more sensible bread to chorizo ratio, the small amount of sourdough bread being entirely insufficient for the sausage. The mash was terribly disappointing, theyd forgotten to season it with anything and so we ended up salting it ourselves so as to avoid eating what was essentially warm tasteless truffle mush!Service was a bit of a miss hence contributing to the disappointing score on the door! Ignored for large amounts of time without water being replenished, no repeat orders for drinks asked for and worst of all, leaving us for an hour while our waiter played on his mobile phone rather than take dessert orders. Despite complaining, it still took another 20 minutes to pay!Id like to go back but I would expect a bit of smartening up by Cau before I decided to return. inher30s.com

  • We Love Food, It's All We Eat

A Sunday roast is best eaten either at someone elses house, a pub or a restaurant. For me, its far too much faff with too little reward when I cook one, plus the washing up takes the joy out of eating it. Luckily CAU restaurants have come to the rescue and introduced a Sunday lunch to their menu a roast rump of beef, Yorkshire pudding, josper roast carrots, beef fat roast potatoes, red wine gravy and onion rings for 15 per person. On the site of our local CAU in Blackheath once lived a no-frills Mexican restaurant that are hard to find in London (unless you go to Greenwich where there seems to be loads). The Cactus Pit was where wed stuff our faces with sizzling mediocre fajitas for next to no money. It was always quiet with a dark and dingy downstairs area so it was only a matter of time before it went. Were glad it was CAU who took the space, had it been a Nandos it would be a different story. We visited the Guildford outpost a couple of years ago, there are also branches in Tunbridge Wells and Cambridge, Henley, Kingston, Bristol, Wimbledon and randomly Amsterdam. They all follow the bright white sleek design (read our Guildford review for more info). CAU always make me think of the Milk Bar in Clockwork Orange without all the naughty stuff.Their infamous Argentinian Salta Clericot 10.50 for a small jug is made with Torronts white wine mixed with red and white grapes, passion fruit pure and basil leaves. Not a correct food match, but it was too early for red. Plus we always like to try something different, this refreshing fruity drink was a proper holiday beverage. Our food arrived on a wooden board with a red moat of blood around the edges a sign the meat has been cooked to our liking. There was plenty of it too, six hefty well-seasoned slices each drizzled in a finely chopped salsa giving it an edge to the norm. The Yorkshire puds were good, especially drenched in the rich red wine gravy. Shame about the onion rings, although they tasted great, the batter lacked crunch and looked pretty anaemic. The roasted carrots got the thumbs up from Ade which is not like him at all (he is NOT a fan of carrots). We couldnt resist dessert, Ade went for an almost healthy Pia-Cau-La Da 5.25 – grilled pineapple with rum caramel, coconut sorbet and lime. A totally tropical taste thats the perfectly light and refreshing end to a heavy roast dinner. I loved the perfectly proportioned CAU Corn Flake ice cream sundae 5.95 Corn Flake flavoured ice cream, Corn Flakes, crumbled chocolate brownie and dulce de leche. I actually preferred this to the Hawksmoors version, sorry Hawksmoor. This is what lazy Sundays are all about, all the pleasure without any of the agro. Next time were going to try the good value brunch, for example its just 7 for spicy baked eggs baked with tomato and jalapeo sauce, black beans and toasted sourdough soldiers. welovefood-itsallweeat.com

  • Why Waste Annual Leave?

The name of this newish Blackheath restaurant is by no means cryptic. Cau is wordplay on cow and given that I don’t eat beef, I was concerned about whether I had any place being in an establishment like this. Reassuringly, a quick sweep of the website started to tickle the tastebuds and I spotted many items I could eat in amongst the cow options for the rest of you, including small-plate tapas style options.I arrived at a bustling restaurant, just light and loud enough to rope in young crowds and friendly and welcoming enough to keep a loyal fan base. Blackheath seems to have a rapid turnover of restaurants and mastering the secret to staying grounded in this environment is definitely the Da Vinci Code of the village. The first item that screams out to me is the pork belly tempura Ive had said belly many times in restaurants but Ive never had such a, crispy tender and melt in the mouth bite, ideally complemented by he tangy sauce served with it. As per the health plan, we throw in a salad for good measure – sweet potato, avocado and chorizo, an intriguing combination of flavours. The chicken skewers were nice enough but it is definitely the guacamole it comes with that stole the show here, creamy with a zing I could eat spoonfuls of this stuff alone. Flatbreads come in a variety of flavours and we opt for rosemary, garlic and parmesan it was perfectly crispy and full of cheesy goodness it always amazes me how just a few sprigs of rosemary can go a long way!We were saving space for dessert as I had hard a lot about the famous cornflake icecream sundae. With layers of chocolate brownie, cornflake ice cream, dulche de leche and topped with cornflakes whats not to like? It was delicious with the warm sweetness of the dulche de leche contrasting beautifully with the earthy chocolate brownie, the cold cornflake icecream and the crisp cornflake topping, all coming together in a saccharine explosion in my mouth… although I dont know that I would have identified the ice cream as cornflake flavoured in a blind taste test. Our helpful and perky waitress also recommended the Churros dipped in dulche de leche. We are no strangers to Churros the Greenwich Market ones being my all time London favourite but these here at Cau certainly give them a good run for their money, slightly crisp on the outside and perfectly soft inside. This is a seriously calorie fest but will I be back? Yes most definitelyWhat will I be ordering next time? The spinach and ricotta empanads and the grilled chicken tortilla salad and the dulche de leche pancakes for dessert. whywasteannualleave.com
