If Sundays in England were made for one thing, it would be this – long lazy lunches of hearty, warm and staple food that crosses generations but always delivers, a round (or five) of slowly paced out drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) and most importantly chilled out conversations with friends and family. And I must say, Edwins have captured every essence of this based on the Sunday lunch experience I encountered. With a cosy and informal interior, the atmosphere was so relaxed, un-rushed and friendly that it’s hard to imagine you are in a location as busy and touristy as London Bridge/Borough. I didn’t bother with a starter. There was no way in the world I was ever going to finish a Sunday roast if I filled up space needlessly first but hubby went for a delicious lightly battered scallop dish with spicy sauce on the side. I did try it and had serious food envy at not having ordered my own!For mains, most of our group stayed true to tradition in ordering a Sunday roast – the choices included a slow cooked lamb, beef and vegetarian option. I’m not veggie myself but have always felt I easily could be as I love vegetarian food so much and accordingly, I decided to try out the veggie roast instead and it certainlly didn’t disappoint.I was served a beautifully cooked and crumbly to perfection filo pastry filled with layer upon layer of goat cheese, butternut squash, spinach and vegetable and served with honey roasted carrots, parsnips, roast potatoes , greens and of course a little drizzle of gravy. All requests that the boys in the group had for sauces and relishes were met with easy approval.I have had many Sunday pub lunches in and around England and I must say, very few have impressed. It’s almost as if, because they are cooked in bulk for large groups of hungry punters, something always disappoints – either the potatoes are undercooked, the meat overdone and chewy, the flavour completely bland. I’ve never found one that is quite up to par. Until I came to Edwins. Everything on my plate, without exception, was done perfectly and I am usually known for the one with the litle appetite amongst friends and families (well….little and often!) but even I managed to finish almots my entire plate because the food was too good to waste! And my companions happily mopped up the remainder! We ordered 2 desserts between four including a plum trifle and a chocolate fondant but in a strange twist, I didn’t really eat any of it as I so full. What was nicest was that we sat there, taking our time for nearly 3 houors the way one expects to do so in a countryside pub and we weren’t rushed away and the place had a quiet charm so unusual for central London.I’m delighted to have found a great place for a Sunday roast in London and I will definitel be returning. whywasteannualleave.com
