I have passed Fish in Borough Market on many occasions. As I only seemed to develop a liking for seafood in later years, it moved up towards the top of my list as a place i wished to go. You feel that because it has been there a long time it has to be special to withstand the competition and fleeting tastes of folk. Having finally booked my table, I was a little bit stumped by the service. I sat there like a lemon with no one offering water or a drink. Staff preferred to make their finishing touches to their mis-en-place and chat. I had arrived early for my table 12.37, but I imagine the team should be ready to rock and roll with a busy market nearby and two settled tables inside.I decided to watch them to make eye contact and I finally got attention. Having ordered a Gavi di Gavi, the glass arrived smudged with elements of the cloth they had used to dry it, great for a 10.50 glass of wine. Having ordered a bottle of water, he proceeded to pour it across my chest from the left to my glass on the right. Doesn’t anybody get trained in service etiquette anymore?I love seafood and the food looked great on their website, so I held on believing that the food would be the saving grace or at least the service would improve. Plus points on both fronts, the food was amazing and a blonde mature waitress who took over looking after out table really picked up the tempo on service. Let’s start with the food. Wow, the food. It was so good, I wish I could go back and start again from when the first dish was placed on our table. My visit was about seafood indulgence, so scrimping on can be ordered, it was full speed ahead. With a refreshing dry Gavi di Gavi to hand, we studied the menu for our order. Slight hiccup with our first order not being available (only after they went away to come back). Would be a good idea to know your 86 items, especially as we were on of the first tables to arrive. It was better service from there. Smiling, warm and sweet service. We finally settled on bruschetta and white bait. The bruschetta was truly something had not seen before. Red tomatoes that looked like they had been photo-shopped to look so vibrant and perfect. As my guest was Italian, she was certainly impressed too. As it was her selection, I could not wait for her to share her thoughts. She was delighted with the taste, mentioning that it actually tasted of ripe tomatoes. Now you would question why a tomato would not taste of tomato, but the thing is, most don’t. They taste of nothing in fact. I imagine because of importing from hot countries, it is hard to maintain its originating succulence, and they may well be treated with all sorts of alien sprays to keep it at least fresh. Anyway, that is my inexperienced thoughts on it, but here, today, the tomatoes where lush on this crunchy sour dough bread. My whitebait was lightly floured and delicate. For main course and with another Gavi di Gavi for me, we went for squid with chorizo and a whole lobster. Yes, I took it to the bridge and went for luxury. I do love lobster, regardless of the messiness with prying the meat out the tail etc. It is totally worth the fishy fingers. For her squid (tender) and chorizo (bursting with flavour), there was also more of our favourite tomato and sour dough bread. No problems with more of the same, as it was just plain lush.My lobster had the perfect amount of garlic butter to no doubt warrant a mint after. The white meat, oh how I have dreamt of it nights to follow. Gorgeous. Fish is the Fish place to go. Even with the service hiccups, the kitchen raised the bar and recovered the operational mishaps. Yes, I will go back and yes, I hope the service will be more consistent. cookandpour.co.uk
I had battered hake and chips for lunch yesterday. The hake was thick and delicious but the meal overall was a little greasy and left me underwhelmed. They did provide a wedge of lemon but it needed more to cut through the taste of the batter. There are better options at Borough Markets.
Nice restaurant in the market with a wide range of seafood, they also have chicken and beef but I wouldn’t recommend it. Friendly staff and good location. Unfortunate that they didn’t have sushi but average restaurant with fresh fish
Place with a good atmosphere for a sit-down meal after visiting Borough market. Food was okay, not amazing but wasn’t bad either. We had to give the table back in 2 hours but it was fair at lunch time for such a busy area in the middle of London. Relatively fast service too!
So it was Good Friday and time to attempt to lent.. Let me know how that went for you.. I failed miserably in the morning by having cereal.. Ahh well, it lead me to Fish!Nice swanky joint, nothing fishy about it.. Haha, poor poor joke.. It was a rainy day in Borough and most of England, thankfully the fish didn’t feel like swimming off my plate. The place is quietly pleasant, huge in regard to seating outside, inside and a little takeaway counter. I had the skate (first time) with chips and mushy peas.. Along with taking some of my partner’s at the end (she had cod & chips, nothing exciting reallyyy) haha the portions were a fisherman’s portion which went down well with my Peroni.Nothing special about the place, decent food, great setting.. Not worth the money we paid.. 50+.. Service was weird, they have no reference as to what ordered who, more a guessing game and you say its yours as they walk past. Nonetheless, still a decent restaurant, for a one time visit.Ship’s ahoy!
Mr Martinez. I went today to have a dinner with some friends, we really like the started, it was squid, also we ordered some salmon sandwich as main coursse. Honestly the food it was okay, but the salmon it was a very tiny porcion, almost as tiny as the bacon was. we did not say nothing at the moment because we realized that the place was full and we were starving, however the place become to be quiet and we decided to comment about our dissapoiment, so we asked one of the waiters to call the manager, we were waitting for more than 15 minutes for her, she come in a very defensive actitud, telling us that we should complaint before to eat, also doubted of us, she said never have such of complain, i saw in her a nasty actitud, she believed we did not want to pay the bill, she was rude and i felt very upset for her actitud, i expected a least the word sorry but i think does not exist in her vocabulary.Best regards,Jorge
Ok food, pricy. I had a grilled sea bass with chips and bf for a cod and cips. My fish was tasty we were pretty impressed with the disclaimer at the menu flaming that everything is fresh and obtained from sustainable sources so we were happy. Our portions was big enough but i sensed and odd taste at the chips… other than that the fish was nicely grilled my bf really liked the fish and chips. We had orange juice and sparkling water with the meal and it cost us 49 pounds (gratitude included). But honestly though, you can get the same quality fish at somewhere else in town for less. So i guess we won’t be visiting fish! again any time soon.
