Tasty food and quiet setting. Delicious food in a quaint setting. Service could have been a bit better but they seemed understaffed, maybe just an off day and our waitress was still very friendly. If I happened to be in the hood, I would pop in and check if they had that salmon dish again. The decor is a bit plain and overall a little too quiet for me, I prefer some degree of buzz….. foodexpectations.com
Potential…. Slightly unprepossessing location down the wrong end of Tooley St. Lovely room – all claret walls and dark floorboards – French bistro without hamming it up. Really efficient and friendly service, though they did have a tendency to hover, and the mains were delivered far too quickly after the starters – kitchen’s fault, but then the waiting staff could have told them to slow down a bit given we weren’t gobbling the starters. Crab mayonnaise (unfortunately the smoked eel with celeriac was off) was zesty and well seasoned, though the crouton it came on was far too toasted to cut, let alone eat. I had wanted the onglet with truffle fries but they’d run out (by 8) so made do with a confit of duck. Tasted a bit livery, and didn’t fall to pieces as it should…but perfectly serviceable and on a nice bed of broad beans. Chocolate tart with raspberries to conclude. Again, absolutely fine, and all washed down with a very nice New Zealand Pinot Noir. My dining companion had fried pigs head which was much more gorgeous than it sounds – they boil the head, scrape off the meat, press it into a terrine and chill, then crumb and fry. Really gorgeous and succulent. Then grilled rabbit which was so moist it tasted more like guinea fowl. He made the better choices, and the kitchen delivered…so will be back to try again.
