We were greeted with a beautiful old warehouse building that, true to its name used to be the site of a chocolate factory, now houses a restaurant, bar, rehearsal room and theatre. We had just over forty five minutes to order and eat which was always going to be a push, despite the very friendly and accommodating staff, so any expectations of a relaxing lunch went completely out of the window.Mum went off-piste and ordered the burger (11) – patty, bacon, cheddar, relish and lettuce – served with chunky chips and a small pot of ketchup on the side. Predictably, the behemoth that arrived was vast and a little on the dry side but for someone who doesn’t tend to order burgers that often, devoured in double quick time.I went for the carne sharing platter, the size of which is in the name. A vast plate of chorizo, parma ham, teruel lomo was fringed with two slabs of duck and ham hock terrine (dry but I soldiered on), tzatziki (underlyingly fizzy but also soldiered on), olives and huge amounts of warm khobez bread. At 15, the portion size of some of the elements was more than ample but the ingredients themselves were a little lacking in flavour, taste and finesse. I didn’t manage to finish as time was against us so I felt a little bit done in when handing over my card for the bill but reassured that we hadn’t opted for a pricier menu. thenotsosecretdiary.com

The Menier Chocolate Factory, (so named because the building is a former chocolate factory), does not make enough of its name, there are rarely any chocolate based dishes on the menu, which is a bit disapointing. The building incorporates a gallery, a small theatre, a bar and a restaurant. On the food front the Restaurant has gone down hill over recent years. Last time I was there, they were trying to match the set menus to what was on at the theatre, which did not really work, i.e., a 70s based play merits 70s style food. There are some pluses – they do have an ok selection of inexpensive wines and the staff are friendly. noexpert.co.uk

Money grabbers. We booked for a pre theatre dinner. Turns out it was a rather mean 2 course affair – 2 starter choices, 2 mains choices, 2 desserts choices. None of them inspiring or particularly appetising, and all clearly pretty cheap and easy to make. First, the restaurant is on 2 levels. We were seated on the lower level, exactly below a chap on the upper level, no more than 18 inches from his legs and feet. Not pleasant, and not hygienic either. Simple solution – install a panel along the railing separating upper and lower level. We asked to move but were told the only suitable table was for 4, and we were only a party of 3. That table was never occupied in the who,e time we were there. No consideration for customers. The starter had clearly been made many hours beforehand, then reheated – to a lukewarm state – for us. Not inspiring, not hot, not very good. Main was a chicken salad with chorizo. The chorizo was directly out of a Tesco (or similar) packet – they hadn’t even bothered to disguise the fact it was cheap packaged stuff. The chicken was likewise. Plus loads of lettuce (cheap way to fill the plate) and some under-ripe olives. And they forgot our side order, which arrived almost when we were finished the meal (though the sides did taste good). Then the bill. First, they tried to stuff us by charging for 2 bottles of wine – we’d had 1. Then they adjusted the bill but still calculated the service based on the incorrect amount including the second bottle of wine. then they tried to blame ‘an old till’. I don’t think so – blatant overcharging / profiteering. All in all, an exceptionally disappointing and aggravating meal and experience, in what is otherwise a very nice venue with an excellent theatre. Staff were pleasant enough but hardly apologetic for the errors and overcharging. Needless to say, they got no tip, and we won’t be returning ever again.
