Food is good, the venue is very spacious and has a large outdoor dining area. While it’s great for lunches and post work drinks, on Wednesday at 10 they host parents and babies coffees and cake, with floor mats for babies to play. Genius pastabites.co.uk
The ambience was good… Most of us wanted the wagyu burger but they ran out of that option.. I had cheeseburger which was good and the fries I had ordered was excellent. Whoever had ordered cheesburger were happy. But two of my colleagues had ordered tuna salad and lemon chicken and the dishes looked disappointing and they said it tasted bad.
The Refinery is actually the restaurant I have been to the most in London, as I work right in front of it and live very close by. I’ve had the experience of having both lunch, dinner and drinks at the Refinery and I have to say that the experience has always been good. This restaurant is usually packed every day of the week, so the service isn’t always that quick – It really does depend on what hour you arrive! I highly recommend the Salt & Pepper squid with lemon mayonnaise and the Roman fries to share. I once had a fantastic steak of the day with Barnaise sauce that was absolutely to die for! If you’re around Southwark and fancy going somewhere for a drink, I also highly recommend the Refinery – It has great ambiance and an extensive cocktail menu!
Food was average, and somewhat overpriced. But the main issue was the service & attitude of staff. Aloof, grumpy and unhelpful would sum it up. Not impressed & wouldn’t return for food.
It’s often the case that during the working week, I’ll want to go and sit down for a quick lunch somewhere. On my birthday I wanted somewhere that would serve food quickly, but also deliver on quality and a great atmosphere. I went with my dad to The Refinery, which is just under the Blue Fin building near London Bridge.I’ve often walked past The Refinery during the evening and it’s an after-work drinks hub for city workers, letting off some steam on Thursday nights. I’ve also heard really great things about their inventive cocktail list.As I looked at the menu, I noticed that it was really wacky and unusual. The menu is larger than the average but has some really interesting things on there.I went for the ‘Fish in a bag’ cocktail (and I have to admit, I ordered it because I thought it would photograph well…) which tasted soooo yummy and was one of their ‘skinny’ cocktails that are low in calories. I thought the idea was really great, but it definitely failed on execution. I was expecting a bag that you would get a fish in…but instead it was a freezer bag that sagged when it was placed on the table. Not quite the great picture I was hoping for…Everyone knows that Christmas and your birthday are the only two days a year that you can totally pig out and not feel bad about it so I went all out on the carb front and went for the Wagyu beef burger with chips, with bacon and cheese. The burger was really good, and it was cooked medium so was still lovely and rare in the middle. It had onion relish and rocket inside as well, making it the ultimate posh burger, and perfect for a birthday :)I may have gone overboard and ordered mac and cheese on the side (oink) with crispy bacon and leeks…but I don’t regret it one bit. The portion of mac and cheese was HUGE…basically it was Lucy sized… I shared it with my dad because the chips were a bit rubbish. We then went for the Wagon Wheel for dessert. My dad and I always share desserts and Wagon Wheels are his childhood favourite. However, the biscuit at the bottom was…well…it was just a crappy biscuit with the texture of a trifle finger (before you put it in the trifle…aka dehydrated), the marshmallow (which was described as a meringue) was really tough and it was topped with sorbet straight from the tub so we struggled to cut through it and our spoons crashed onto the plate when we finally managed it. The chocolate on the top saved the dessert from being a total fail, and my dad and I thought that this whole dessert could have been transformed, had there been hot chocolate fudge sauce to pour onto the top. I guess you could say I wasn’t entirely impressed.I really hate writing horrible things about restaurants because I’m really not a snobby person, but one thing to note was that the staff were very impersonal, rude and more interested in talking about eachothers outfit choices for the day. The food came out really quickly, but there’s nothing worse than trying to awkwardly catch the eye of the serving staff for half an hour when you want to pay and get back to work.I will definitely be going there again for drinks, as I think the cocktail selection and variety on the menu was amazing. They obviously have some very creative and wacky ideas for food and drinks but I can’t help thinking that they fail on execution….or perhaps the staff aremore concerned with the colour of their new shoes than they are about listening to their customers. diamondintheashes.com
I like the food and the drinks. Beware it is a loud venue with high levels of hubub. Great for after work instant atmosphere. Not for a quiet night or to talk about the boss. You’ll be shouting before you know it.
