An excellent Fuller’s pub in the heart of Croydon, The Spread Eagle is spacious without seeming cavernous and has an excellent selection of lagers and cask ale. The cask selections are all primarily Fuller’s, however the odd independent brewer often finds a space among the pumps, usually in the form of the locally produced Cronx. Fuller’s offer an interesting range of seasonal ales that rotate (with the season), giving drinkers the choice of lighter, blonde ales in the summer and heavy set Porters and Stouts when the cold weather approaches. The food is of a very good standard, with this particular branch of Fuller’s being one of the Ale and Pie House outlets. So of course, there are pies. And as the traditional pub pie goes, The Spread Eagle offers up a very good example of the quintessential British dish. There is always a range to choose from and the menu does frequently rotate, however the old stalwart classic Fuller’s Steak and E.S.B is a regular fixture. There’s always a surprise or two on the menu in the form of lamb shoulder or chorizo or perhaps even something from the sea. The portions of accompanying mash and veg do look a little on the small side, however once consumed with a pint of something cheeky you’ll be glad the plate was no bigger. There are a number of places to watch live sport in Croydon and The Spread Eagle has to be at the top of the list here. There is a large (very large) television in one corner of the downstairs bar plus two smaller ones towards the other end. Upstairs hosts a large projector and another smaller bar with plenty of seating, thus allowing for two games to be shown at once.Upstairs also turns into a mini cinema on a Monday, showing a different film each week and shows both a matinee and evening performance. And a theatre, too? Yes, that’s correct. Roughly each month The Spread Eagle host a performance from various production companies and provides a unique space for showcasing some of the capitals brightest young thespians.
