It’s cheap and filling, especially given the neighbourhood, but that’s about all. We needed a little sustenance mid afternoon and shared a prawn chow mein. There were six sizeable prawns. They were a bit hard to eat, being unpeeled. They had been de-veined though, in a rather haphazard fashion. Sauce was a little dull, greasy, and lacking in garlic. The chilli sauce condiment was yucky. No liquor licence.
IT’S NOT MEANT TO BE POSH, THAT’S THE POINT…I don’t really get the people who have complained about the decor and the food in the Oriental Canteen. You can see just by looking at it that it’s not haute cuisine and that it’s a simple street cafe with no pretensions. If that’s not what you’re after then just don’t go in and head on to any of the other fancier chinese restaurants in the area.I work a lot in Kensington and for me the Stick & Bowl in Kensington High Street is my go to place for good chinese food at a low price. Again the interior is very simple and functional but the food is delicious.The Oriental Canteen is South Kensington’s answer to the Stick & Bowl. It’s been here for years and the clue to how good the food is is seeing how many orientals eat in here. it’s the same with the Stick & Bowl. It’s reliable, affordable and quick. I hope it never changes.
