I visited this restaurant on a quiet Monday afternoon after being intrigued by some of the menu items on the display board outside. Overall, I was not impressed by the experience and it is unlikely I will return any time soon. The first issue I experienced is that I was expecting to meet with others, however the staff turned my friends away, telling them that none of their patrons were expecting anybody (of course, I had told them). But then again, mistakes can happen right? In general I felt the staff were unresponsive and did not seem very enthusiastic about anything which was a little bit off-putting. The interior is nice and clean though a little bit sterile and not very homely. For good views of Exhibition Road, be sure to snag a table on the first floor. Now on to the food. There’s not much to say about this really. For a chain, the food quality is about what you’d expect – it’s simple and decently tasty. I can’t comment on how authentic it is, but it was quite similar to other Thai meals I’ve tried in the past. I was slightly disappointed at how mild my curry was though, given that it was supposedly the spiciest thing on the menu. I expected it to be a challenge to consume but barely even broke a sweat. Further, the portion sizes here are appalling. I finished my meal in no more than about 10 spoonfuls and was still quite hungry when we left. For the price, the food and experience was definitely not worth it!If you’re in the area and are craving Thai food, Thai Square is certainly not out of the question, but don’t go out of your way to eat here.
For me, 3/5 is doing quite well, which is why I’m baffled as to how Thai Square has a 3.6 rating on this very site.I went with a friend for a quick pre-cinema dinner. I had the King Prawn Panang curry with sticky rice, my companion the Lamb Massaman curry with egg fried rice. Granted, neither of us were pushing the boat out.I laughed out loud when I just visited the Thai Square website. It’s slogan is apparently ‘The most authentic Thai food in London’. My sticky rice was brought to my table inside a microwave bag, which itself was inside of an authentic-looking steaming basket.I don’t know if they forgot to take it out of the bag, or whether it was done on purpose – nothing was said when the waitress cleared up. We certainly had a laugh ‘unpackaging’ it though – imagine a rectangular vac-pac bag. The rice slid out of the bag, in exactly this shape. I really regret not taking a photo, it was hilarious. I’m not sure if this would be anybody’s idea of authentic. After breaking it up and fluffing it up with my chopsticks a bit, it did a passable job. had the kitchen staff thought to do it, I probably would have been fooled! If you want food fast, here’s your place. Granted, we were the only two in the entire place, but our meals were at our table in less than five minutes. It’s physically not possible to prepare something ‘authentic’ in that time.Anyway, for a microwaved meal, it wasn’t that horrible. The lamb was actually very tender. It’s just that…I don’t know…I expect the restaurant to at least TRY to maintain the pretence that they’ve gone to some effort to justify the price. Some of these ‘gourmet’ supermarket offerings are pretty good these days, couldn’t I have just gone with one of those?I wouldn’t take your date there. It would be over a bit quickly,.
Thai square is quite popular in London, there are more than 10 outlets in London itself. The food is fairly good and not very expensive.I went to the south Kensington outlet, the building is quite dodgy looking and the restaurant is quite small and cramped. The service is good though, the staff is quick in making and serving their food.I had the chicken stir fry in a basil sauce and one portion of chicken kung po with steamed rice, the basil chicken was flavourful and tasted quite good, but the kung po chicken was quite average It lacked spice and was a little bland. I will go here again to try other dishes since i did not get the opportunity to try a different variety of dishes but as of now if you do go avoid the kung po chicken and have the basil chicken it was quite good.
Lovely food! 🙂
Wrong. I went there yesterday and I was very disappointed with the food and the place overall. We ordered Chicken Salad, Squid (starter) and a Beef dish. The salad was basically reheated minced chicken with some herbs that smelled off on a bed of 3 leaves of salad. The squid was was soggy and not fresh. The beef was very chewy and almost impossible to eat. I did not eat my salad and after the first bite I decided to return it because I didn’t like it and it smelled off. Also there was nothing written in the menu that the chicken is served hot (reheated). Yet, still I was made to pay for the salad and the service charge was added on the top of the bill. When I asked a manager to take the salad off from the bill she refused saying that there was nothing wrong with the salad and she will charge us for it. Overall food too expensive and not good at all. I would not recommend the place.
Disappointing for thai. I was quite excited to try some authentic Thai food but I guess this wasn’t the best in London. The pad thai I had was overly greasy and tasted like a fried Chinese noodle dish instead of real pad thai. The Tong Yum soup was really really good but the noodle dishes need work.
Worst meal in London. And that’s saying a lot! The food was both cold and tasted awful — the curry was as though they had tossed a few vegetables in some coconut milk, raised to tepid, then served. Even if you’re craving Thai, stay away.
