Very disappointing. Having seen this restaurant on my way to work, and being enchanted by the jade green facade I made a special visit to Esarn Kheaw during my lunch break. I must say I have rarely been so disappointed. When I entered the restaurant (around 1 pm on a Friday afternoon) the entire restaurant was empty barring one table of possibly the owners (and their friends) chatting away and for a second I thought they were closed. For a good minute or so, no one bothered to get up, lead me to a table or make any eye contact. Finally, a tired looking man waved at me (without showing any signs of getting up getting up) to sit anywhere I wanted. Wanting to have a positive experience I thought, right, it’s a family run restaurant so maybe no formality is the way to go.After a further few minutes, their lone diner still did not feel the love. I got a menu (now from a friendly young Thai girl, who spoke impeccable English). I ordered the express menu which offered fragrant Jasmine Rice and promises of holy basil, chilli, oyster sauce.. Oh I liked the sound of that! What came was basically black gloop. There was minced chicken in an alarmingly black and beyond tolerance salted dark soy/ Oyster sauce base. I had a spoon. I had a drink of water. I fought back my disappointment, The next mouthful was worse, made even more intolerable by a member of the chattering restaurant staff, now on her iPhone Face-timing right next to me (of course the speakers were on!). As if that wasn’t enough the entire table now joined in the face-time party (yay.)Having had enough, or rather not being able to have enough I dared to flag down the waiter’s attention. Too late. She had lost herself to her phone too. Being the only person in the restaurant, how hard can it be to make your voice heard (and I have one mighty voice!). So I first waved, then politely said a ‘Hello’, then apologetically raised my voice louder. Clearly no Progress. I tried again. Gave myself a break, checked my emails, looked at the black gloop on my plate, made a few sad, lonely faces. None. Zilch. Kaput. I was a nobody left to my devices. Right, this time I went in with the full decibels. I screamed a firm hello, waved like I could be drowning in the ocean and finally got the attention of the waitress. Phew.Having no confidence by now of any empathy, I still gave them a chance to redeem their honour and politely voiced my concern of the almost bitter saltiness of the dish and how there had been no attention to their double lonely (only and lonely) diner’s needs. The waitress replied – it comes like this only. And with that I was handed the check and ushered off, never to return again.
Hate to say this because the service was extremely good and everybody there very friendly but I have to say that the food was not good on the night we went. We ordered some noodles w/ chicken, a red curry and some entree platter. Entrees were good but the mains were very bad unfortunately! May have just been the dishes we ordered but disappointing.
WoW Thai at it’s Best. It’s been 20 years since I was last here, time has aged a few of the family, but the food is still amazing, Real VFM, we went around 9ish on a friday night, well worth the 20min wait
Deee-licious!. My boyfriend and I had a fab time at Esarn Kheaw last night! We had a 6pm booking, which was the start of the dinner service and the restaurant filled up very quickly generating a healthy, atmospheric buzz. The chap serving us (who I think may have been the owner) was such a joy – enthusiastic about the food, extremely informative, attentive and gave off an air of positivity which made us settle right in to our surroundings. To start, we shared the Thai Sausages and Spring Rolls – absolutely delicious. I’ve never tasted Thai Sausages before, but they were healthy in size, (probably not so healthy in content!) and we were given a very decent portion size too. Delicious! The spring rolls were good too, bite-sized and didn’t hang around for long!My main was my favourite though – Pad Thai Kai. In the past when I’ve ordered Chicken Pad Thai elsewhere, it’s usually been overloaded with egg and not so much chicken, but the dish at Esarn Kheaw was the opposite – full of chicken and bursting out with flavour and colour! No pale looking, flavourless noodles around here! Writing about it now is literally making my mouth water, it was that good. For dessert I had the mango sorbet, which was a great ending to a great night and great meal. Light on the stomach, but juicy on the palate!Yum Yum YUM! I highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely visit again!

Good First Impressions. I went to Esarn Kheaw this evening with my girlfriend this evening. The papaya salad to start was tasty, with the right amount of chili but too much fish sauce for my girlfriend. The fishcakes had a star anise flavour and were average in flavour and above average in size. The Ox tripe soup I had for a main course was a truly delicious hot and sour mix of flavours. The red curry with prawns my girlfriend asked for wasn’t on the menu, but they were happy to oblige. She has red prawn curry at every Thai restaurant we go to and she assures me it was above average, although she didn’t like the bitter aubergine peas it was served with. The banana fritters were absolutely spot on, and had a very light crispy batter. The meal with drinks came to 34.50. It was a Tuesday night and they had to turn 4 or 5 groups away because they were too busy. The service was good, and as other reviewers have stated the head waiter was an excellent character. We’ll be back.
