A very nice taste, good portion size and good quality food. It is slightly on the expensice side, but a definite recommend. The interiors and ambience are great as well, I can see why it is a Michelin recommend. I would give it 4.25.
Happy to say that as a picky Chinese foodie I was overall pleasantly surprised with Shikumen. Yes, there were some faults here and there with the cooking times but in terms of flavors they’re pretty bang on with the food. Notable dishes: crispy duck, ginger steamed fish and three cup chicken happybelly.org.uk
Theres a warm welcome at Shikumen in Shepherds Bush, the bar and restaurant on the ground floor of the Dorsett Hotel. Translated, the word Shikumen means stone warehouse gate and is a traditional Shanghainese architectural style, combining Western and Chinese elements. As you enter the gate youre greeted by a huge airy space with lots of polished granite and dark wood, I liked the intimate private spaces alongside large tables with a Lazy Susan centrepiece to encourage sharing.Like the architecture, East meets West in this restaurant serving modern Chinese food. Handmade dim sum and afternoon tea are popular and this year theres a special Valentines Day menu.Mr and Me arrived at about twenty past six when the restaurant was relatively empty, an hour later, the raised floor area was full.A waitress came straight over and took our drinks order and within moments a tray of pickled vegetables arrived. Mr took a shine to the sweet and sour cabbage, and, without prompt, another plate arrived.Shikumen is the type of place you can come and eat comfortably with friends, large groups, as a couple and not feel out of place if youre on your own either. Its a great space for large celebrations and isnt too heavy on the pocket. If youre after a budget buffet eat-as-much-as-you-can meal, you wont find it here. The restaurant prides itself on Peking Duck and a few special dishes like soft shell crab, braised chicken with radish and clay pot tofu with mushrooms in a black bean sauce. We chose from the a la carte menu and began with half a Roasted Peking Duck (26.50) carved at the table. The rest of the duck was ours to have with a choice of fried rice or noodles and it arrived with our other main courses. The Restaurant Manager, Alan Ho, suggested we try the skin dipped in a little icing sugar. Wrong but so right. The meat was delicious and came with homemade pancakesalong with the usual sliced spring onion and cucumber and there were plenty of pancakes to stuff too.The eight pieces of seafood Dim Sum (8.80) not only looked beautiful but tasted stunning. Filled with lobster, king prawn and king prawn and crab, they were hot and peeled away easily from the base. Our second (and probably not needed) appetiser was another restaurant speciality, soft shell crab in almond butter egg sauce (9.80), which was sweet and tasty, plenty for two.The Fish section of the menu has plenty of choice and features Black Cod. All of the fish served here is fresh and so I opt for the fried scallops with Macadamia nuts (16.50).Again, a generous portion and the scallops were beautifully fresh, and cooked perfectly, easily enough for two to share.Mr had the Mongolian Venison (14.50) which was buttery, spicy and with lots of flavour, although to be fair I didnt really get the richness of venison. Our duck with fried noodles arrived and had that lovely just -fried wok taste, however, we struggled to finish the dish andDuck NoodlesWe had no room left for dessert. The staff here are incredibly attentive and knew the menu well, we didnt drink wine so couldnt test their knowledge on the list but safe to say the staff speak good English and were fluent with the Chinese guests. Our bill was 106.20 including water, a ginger beer and service. We ordered two dishes too much, take advice from the staff they did warn us we might be overdoing it.This is one of the best meals Ive eaten near my home in a very long time. I have no hesitation in recommending Shikumen which is definitely a rival for many Queensway and Chinatown restaurants.Parking is an issue in this built-up area, but you can park in Westfield Shopping Centre and walk across the Green. Nearest Tubes are Shepherds Bush on the Central Line or Shepherds Bush Market on the Hammersmith and City and Circle Lines.Shikumen Shepherds Bush, Dorsett Hotel, 58 Shepherds Bush Green, London, W12 8QE. I came with a friend for a quick post-shopping dim sum trip; normally I’d only do yum cha with a lot of people but in this case, when the cravings call you’ve got to go with it. I’d heard great things about Shikumen so thought since we were in the neighbourhood, we might as well give it a go.It was pretty good – though I must admit I was somewhat hindered by having a dining companion who doesn’t like seafood… bye bye beloved har gao and any other prawn and meat combo! But I still love her, gives me another excuse to go back! The roast pork cheung fun was firmer than I’ve ever had it but really well filled, the congee was sadly a little bland but they were generous with the century egg (yum) and pork, the chicken and chive dumplings were fantastic, as were the sticky rice parcels! Highlight for me was definitely the xiao long bao – so well filled with soup! Will definitely be coming back with a bigger crowd! connieconsumes.com
Fantastic Peking duck ! Served with proper soft pancakes and super soft buns. So good. Can’t wait to go back for more. Delicious Xiao long bao (dumplings with soup inside – careful not to burn your mouth). Black sesame ice cream for dessert rounded off the meal very nicely. operationgoodfood.wordpress.com
An impromptu desire for dimsum while in Shepherd’s Bush at lunchtime today and a web search highlights Shikumen as a nearby option. A quick phone call later and they confirmed a table and advise Dim Sum served until 4pm. All good news but it gets better. An unassuming entrance in a modern hotel, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table in a quite trendy contemporary style room. The best bit was the quality of the dimsum. Really flavourful roast pork Cheung Fun with chunky pieces of pork and excellent quality steamed and fried pork and prawn dumplings. Clearly all hand made in the restaurant and in our view some of the best we have sampled in the UK and we consider ourselves fans and regular lunchtime Chinatown visitors. Unfortunately for us this restaurant is a bit out of the way but will look to come back if in the area. Would like to try out their Roast Peking Duck with the one being carved at the neighbouring table looking succulent and yummy.
An alternative to dim sum in Chinatown. Some dishes are better than other but overall a decent meal.Recommended dishes includes:- Venison puff- Xiao Long Bao- Crab and prawn dumplingsGood tea selection.Conveniently located near Shepherd’s Bush station, inside the Dorsett Hotel. Smart deco, reasonably friendly staff. The price is a bit on the high side but I guess you do pay for the ambience as well as the food.I intend to go back to try out other dishes. See if I’d change my mind. shelives2eat.com
