This is a strange place. I call it strange because of how it feels. The restaurant has a reasonably large seating capacity but looks dingy. You hardly find it operating at full occupancy. I am unable to understand how any investor can bankroll this.The food oscillates between ordinary and bad. For chicken satay, we got deep fried chicken on skewers. The egg fried rice lacked any taste. Only the chicken in black bean sauce was okay. You should only go here if you really want to have Chinese food and you can’t find anything else.
My theory is that you can never go wrong with Chinese food. It’s the same everywhere and this place is no exception. The food is good and liked the dim sum very much. The service could be better.
Celebrated my birthday here in one of the vip rooms downstairs, which was amazing, the food was also on point and affordable + big portions. Only bad thing is that the staff weren’t very friendly and kept trying to rush us out as they were closing in 30mins even though we hadn’t yet finished our meal.
Avoid this place like the Plague!! I have been there to eat twice… actually 3 times. The first was food that tasted like Slops, I then thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and went there a second time, they were closed for hygiene purposes, The third time I went there was so much screaming in the Restaurant and again the food was crap and to top it all off, when we left, we saw mice chasing each other outside the place…. Luckily I survived without getting food poisoning!!
Perhaps one of the strangest dining experiences I have had in London! That’s not to say it was a bad experience just strange, the vast mix of clientele, the location, decor and layout of the restaurant all lead to me scratching my head a little. I assume this place relies on heavy footfall from the excel because I can’t see for the life of my why you would visit. It is quite a generic Chinese restaurant but there has been a half baked attempt at glamourising it and nudging the prices up.In fairness the food is actually very nice. HAd I been eating this in a very simplistic restaurant in china town i’m sure i would have been raving about it, but the fact it feels as though the kitchen has been taken from somewhere and dropped into this establishment is definitely a negative.So in the very unlikely event yo are near the excel, desperate for food and can’t find anywhere else (as we randomly found ourselves) maybe give this one a miss londoncurryblog.com
They Threatened to call the police because I refused to pay the service charge!!!. I decided after seeing the Time Out review on China Palace it might be a good idea to go for a meal. I was so very wrong. I ordered the baked crab for my main meal, it didn’t come as I expected. I expected there to be white flesh in the shell instead there some sort of grey mush I have had whole crab many times before and never had I seen anything like this, I’m sure this was completely my fault and the dish was how it should be, nevertheless I thought it tasted horrible and I just really couldn’t eat it. I informed the waiter that I really didn’t like the dish and he took it away. I then spent the rest of the evening with a bowl of boiled rice expecting someone to offer me and alternative; instead I got horrible looks from all the waiters and felt really uncomfortable. They seemed to notice I was trying to get there attention but just ignored me anyway. In the end I got really fed up, I waited for my boyfriend to finish his meal and had to shout for the bill. I informed the waiter to remove the service charge, understandably as I hadn’t been offered a main meal! He said he had to speak to the manager. He came back and said no he wouldn’t remove the service charge, I explained why I felt I hadn’t received adequate service, he still said he said he wouldn’t remove the charge and that it was my fault and that I should be grateful that he had removed the price of the crab from the bill even though I hadn’t been offered an alternative and sat there with no meal. I informed him that he either remove the charge or we would walk out, which he replied he would call the police! He was so rude the whole time speaking in another language to one of the other waiters and laughing and joking with him when I was clearly very upset. I made sure I didn’t back down and finally he removed the charge. I informed the waiter I wouldn’t be coming back and he just laughed. We ended up paying over 30 and I left hungry. This is the worst experience I have ever had; I was so shocked by the way I was treated and hope other people don’t make the same mistake I did by visiting the China Palace.
