Prof. S and Mrs S. My husband is a visiting professor in a nearby university and we spent a weekend in Canterbury. Amongst the other places we have been to during our stay, this pub was the only disappointment ( though it came huge). The standard of the food is not much better than any ordinary local pub you come across in almost all the places in England and for the price they are charging we were expecting something not too ordinary. The menu of course was different, it was Mexican but not any better than supermarket frozen types I would imagine. We also saw a sensible couple walking away because not only the chef s made them wait for too long but they burnt their food into a black piece of carbon. The bartenders are of course , not apologetic and it was amusing to hear the response of them such as there is only one person in the kitchen. After that we knew we were probably expecting too much from our food, afterall you should never expect too much when they have got rotating bartenders in the kitchen just to keep the place running. It was surprisingly full but I would be surprised to learn people leave with full satisfaction.Anyway this is a place we shall not come back to, and if you do, for some unfortunate reason, then never ever order the non-Mexican dish they have on the menu. I would always trust the Asda’s Mexican range better, even though I have not tasted it. Hopefully see a great but different restaurant in the same place next time we come to Canterbury.

Mexican Cricket?. Ye Olde Beverlie is according to urban legend the birthplace of cricket and so quintessentially English, this latest incarnation of an old English Pub has seen it come back as a fusion of mexican and English cuisine and like all those new Dr Who incarnations, this strangely works! The food is well prepared and presented, uses the best of ingredients and is served in portions that will not make you need a chinese take away later before bed time. The atmosphere is the same old pub, including the back garden where bat & trap (A local Kentish game) has been played for centuries (They claim to have records of games from 1740) but at present this is devoted to an outside food area.I had the mexican ribs which had a sauce you could cheerfully kill for and my companion had a steak that was rare enough that a good vet could cure it but that was able to be cut with a butter knife.A great new addition to the Canterbury restaurant scene
