Passed by here for a quick pizza yet ended up having a calzone because they had a yummy looking one in display. Fresh dough and ingredients, pretty good taste but doesnt feel real Italian. I liked it but wasnt amazed.

truly Italian restaurant. you can even notice from the main entrance. the bar deck has been made following the typical local bars in Italy. food is beautiful and plenty of choices. staff nice and polite. Price reasonable.

Real Italian food and drinks, great quality and service. Will definitely choose it again! Perfect for both aperitifs and dinner. We had spritz and bruschetta just like at home

It was a random decision, running into this Italian joint at Chalk Farm and, by God, it was one of the rare fortunate mistakes you’re glad you made when you’re hungry! Bar Centrale has quite the Italian food and wine menu, but what is really worth mentioning is their home-baked breads. We had ordered a garlic bread and cannelloni (vegetarian) with salad – it was one of the most delicious and cheesy meals we’d ever eaten in a long while! The staff was friendly and chilling and the generous portions of food were served quick, good and piping hot, at highly competitive prices! I’d recommend every tourist to visit Bar Centrale once at least to taste good Italian food in London. The only minus, ironically, was that the food portions were so generous that you couldn’t try much on their menu (especially after eating the garlic bread).

We have tickets to Franz Ferdinand at the Roundhouse, but before we submit ourselves to 90 minutes of high-octane indie music we have to eat. After a few minutes walking along Chalk Farm Road we begin to tire of our search and pop into Bar Centrale – our decision is based off little more than prices and an everlasting desire for pizza. We ask for a table for two and watch on as the staff – led by a tall, Fawlty-esque Italian – fuss around bringing in a spare table from outside. As we wait, a genial elder gentleman beside us toys with a mic. We are sat in front of him as he begins to, ahem, perform. It is rare I will say such things, but lets get the unimportant things like the food out of the way. The pizza is average, but loaded with toppings. I wish, however, that I’d chosen a calzone. These are loaded, and bulge like an appendix ready to burst. I could not explain just how large the calzones are without sounding like I am describing a cartoon. They are comically big. They swell like a mid-sized pumpkin. They look like the BFG’s Cornish pasty. Our pizzas disappoint slightly as a result, with a base that is just a little overcooked, but they are nevertheless good value and far from poor. The joy, though, that makes the whole meal, is the entertainment. We can only assume that the elderly gentleman singing to us is a member of the owner’s family. There is almost no other reason for him to be there. Over the hour or so that we are present in the bar, he endears himself to us in a number of ways:1. He sings only Frank Sinatra songs. Further more, he sings only the most obvious Frank Sinatra songs available. In the entire time we are there, he sings only one that we do not recognise. Otherwise, ‘My Way’, ‘Fly Me To The Moon’, ‘That’s Life’ and ‘Come Fly With Me’ all make appearances.2. He sings out of tune. Or, rather, not quite in tune. Occasionally flat, occasionally a mile off, every song is sung with a huge smile and an earnestness that means, regardless of technical quality, it is impossible to watch with anything less than a smile.3. Sometimes that smiles burns irrepressibly into a laugh. For instance, when half way through a song, he forgets the lyrics. He stops the music. He starts the song again and then – at the exact same point – forgets the lyrics again. Later, when some friends of his stop by, he’ll drift away from his songs mid-way through, and return to them later only when prompted. The pizza is generous but flawed, and so is the music – though the latter is endearing enough to make your entire night. swilliamthomas.tumblr.com
