Cottons is a colourful, hole-in-the-wall, rum shack of an establishment that resembles the beachfront restaurants you might imagine to have popped up in Kingston, Jamaica. The immediately obvious friendliness of the bar and restaurant staff make you feel at home, however, and you’ll be quickly ushered through the bar and past the impressive array of coloured bottles to the basement that is surprisingly large, given the poky nature of the restaurant’s exterior. I was there for a friday night dinner for two, in the boozy ‘pre-game’ territory of 8.30pm. Soon after taking our seats and commencing our perusal of the menu, we were treated to an eruption of hip-hop and RnB on the restaurants music speakers, which shot down any chance of this being a romantic, candle-lit meal and intimate conversation. Instead, the meal had become an extra to the party atmosphere we had suddenly found ourselves in; an appetiser to the main course that was our night out. We ordered the Jerk Chicken and Avocado Spring Rolls to start, and the Curried Goat and Boston Jerk Pork as shared main courses, with rice on the side. The spring rolls were tasty, but weren’t too dissimilar to the spring rolls you might order in an Asian restaurant, especially considering the sweet and sour sauce that was drizzled over them. The chewy, curried goat, served in a thick, soupy sauce and rice, was spicy but very flavoursome. We did regret ordering the exceptionally spicy Jerk Pork however, as the dish was riddled with sickly, fatty deposits without offering a great deal of meat. Having paid the fairly reasonable 20 per head, we navigated our way through the jubilant crowd that had assimilated in the bar and that was dancing to the loud beats of Jaimie Foxx, to the exit. This was quite a fitting end to the occasion; I would summarise by saying that the restaurant is worth a visit but perhaps more for the drinking than for the eating.
Avoid – rip off- terrible service – not authentic Jamaican food as review make out!,. Got to cottons around 630pm for the first time today 7/7/13.Upon arrival we got told that they were full booked and we could sit at the bar instead of the restaurant because we didn’t make a booking (fair enough) we came along way to come here for some GOOD jerk. Wrong!I placed my order over the bar and they demanded money before I got my food, I thought fine, as we’re not sitting in the restaurent but two stools and a small ledge opposite the bar. I thought this was still ok.When I got to my seat I calculated what they charged me and it came over by 5.I spoke to the gentleman who served me and after looking back at the recipt he told me the service charge was added to my bill even before I go my food and even still we went sitting in the restaurant but the two stools and a tiny ledge! He then told me the manager would come and speak to me.I saw the manager and even made eye contact with him after I saw the bar staff talk to him. The Manager didn’t even have the ordasity to come up to me once, better yet, it was him who punched in my order when I placed it with the bar staff. To top it off the food was way over priced! I have had better frozen jerk chicken, I kid you not.Service poor, food poor, and a complete rip off! Avoid this place, go to one of the small nice and easy Italian joints in the area instead. I only went there because of the reviews online, if you’ve had proper jerk chiken, this is not the one for you! Disappoint awaits and a small dent in your wallet.
Cottons. Went there with wife and kids last Sunday. I’m originally from Sydney so not really a conneseuir of caribbean cuisine but I a darn well know what constitutes good food and this was clearly it. Seafood platter was absolutely delish. Very relaxed and ended staying the whole afternoon there. One of those special days out. Hope to be coming again for office do.
Cottons Thursday 16th June 2011. I took my brother and his wife to what was one of my favourite restaraunts all be it that I have not been for a while. Decor has changed as well as the menu. It was without doubt the worst meal I have had the displeasure to have paid for (most of the food was returned un-eaten.)!! Started with the bread and butter ?(I can’t believe it was butter) more like yellow coloured vaseline) Starters fish platter suposedly for two, rubberised prawns one maaga piece of roti, tastless fish. I should have heeded the warning but being the stubborn guy that I am got more fish as the main, one king prawn with shell, eyes, bloody tentacles all over the place (palmed it off on the missus), Brother and wife Curry goat; a sickly sweet concoction which again went un-eaten as well as the vegetable ravioli thing that my partner had (well ,she didn’t have, because she didn’t eat it). All for a hundred quid (including the non optional 12.5% gratuity)I can’t go on anymore as I have to go to work and it would take all day to do a full review.
A Complete Joke. Why is this place even well know. I love carribean food and I’ve been to the carribean on a few occasions and I’ve never even heard of some of the dishes they are trying to sell. No jerk chicken, no brown stew chicken, no curry goat…huh??? Forget it!
Going downhill!. This place has really gone down, i have been coming here for 20+ years.1 star for the atmosphere and service, the food was terrible, the drinks warm and the glasses dirty, i drank my dragon stout from the bottle. When i made a comment about this and the fact that the service charge was already added to my bill and prefer to decide myself, the manager was a total smart ars* telling me that the restaurant will be here for another 25 years. Well it will have to improve dramatically to do this!!!!Dr K
