Went with friend for dinner at this local restaurant. The restaurant was practically empty that the time there for one would have expected a warm welcome. Now granted only one person was ordering food, the other ordered drink. We were told by the maitre that if we cannot all order food then we have to go…. given there were only a handful of other patrons in the restaurant at time we found this remarkable. The staff were very rude to us and took away our drinks and escorted us to the door. Given this was their attitude to paying customers it is no wonder why this restaurant is always hiring staff! Service is always very slow. I never want to go this restaurant again. It was a very bad experience for me and my friend.
If I’m expected to queue outside to see Adam Levine twat about on stage then I want a decent meal ahead of it. And a decent meal, Muang Thai, it turns out, isn’t.It’s surprisingly dead given the iTunes Festival is about 30 yards away – maybe people know something we don’t. The floor tables at the front look nice but probably a lot less comfortable than they look, so we plonk down in the generic main dining area.I quite like my Kanom Jeeb starter, five minced prawn and chicken dumplings with minimal gristle and an above-average garlic soya sauce. The sesame toasts were however far too spongy, puffed beyond comfort and tasting more of air than prawn. My jungle curry was watery and had me rabidly dunking jasmine rice in an attempt to make it vaguely substantial. The flavours weren’t too bad once you got over the initial disappointment.Over at the other end of the spectrum, V’s beef massaman was overly gloopy and tart. We also got the ‘steamed broccoli’ as a side hoping this was a simplified description – to be given steamed broccoli with a few sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Well worth a fiver.Overspiced and overpriced, Muang Thai didn’t just leave my stomach empty. When you end up being upstaged by Maroon 5 it’s definitely time to have a word with yourself. londonsocialeat.com
I’m reviewing Muang Thai not because it’s anything exceptional, but because it’s good, and not particularly on the radar. Muang Thai is a small restaurant on Chalk Farm road. Blink as you walk past it, and you’ll miss it. Really, this is a shame. The Camden area it full of eateries you’re better off not attending, but Muang Thai is not one of them. The location is clean, the food very tasty, and the staff polite. The interior resembles something of a walk in closet in size and shape, but they’ve done all they can to make the place cosy. And it certainly feels clean and hygienic to boot – another plus point for a place in the otherwise grimy Camden Town. Screw Flanders.
Attractive decor, good service, delicious food. Really authentic tastes and aromas of Thai food offered in an extensive menu. We had a very enjoyable meal.
