Looking for somewhere to get a sandwich or light bite, we happened upon the Caf Pomodoro in Soho. We chose this sandwich bar because we prefer to support the independents. We should have gone elsewhere. The only reason this caf has scored so highly was because my granddaughters sausages and chips and the small side salad accompanying the sandwiches, though uninspiring, were fresh. It is not difficult to cook chips and throw two Walls bangers into the deep fat fryer is it?The next time that I decide to have a salt beef sandwich, I shall go to Selfridges Brass Rail. I have seen more meat on a jockeys whip. The salt beef was wafer thin and artfully placed so that it looked full on the cut an old British rail sandwich trick. The majority of the sandwich seemed to be the dill pickles. My grandsons lasagne was a re-heat. Lasagne, last time I prepared it, contains a bchamel sauce and is not just tomato flavoured minced beef. It had been freshened up by the addition of some cheddar cheese and it was crispy where it really shouldnt be crispy. I tried a small bite and without going into detail and not suggesting that there was a causal link, but we both needed the toilet about an hour later. The greatest crime against gastronomy was perpetrated against my wife with her Bacon, Cranberry and Brie Panini. The bacon had been pre-cooked and the other ingredients seemed to be there in name only. When I brought this to the attention of the manager, he was completely disinterested and did nothing to remedy our complaint.Drinks seemed on the high side of medium with 1.20 for a tin of coke and 1.40 for a small bottle of water. So, if you are passing through Soho and fancy a light bite; I would suggest keep going and give this place a wide berth.
