quite awful to be honest! was seated in a tiny room with about 4 tables altogether maximum. some of the staff had occupied some of the tables too!! the menu impressed, only because it had hundreds, literally, of choices. I got a soft she’ll crab with garlic flakes thinking it would be light. but alas, it came looking like a pile of fried crumbs with tiny crabs hidden under the crumbs. the crabs were also seemingly deeply fried. the meal just tasted of 90% oil! not a happy diner! I was too scared to try anything else! I will give it 10/10 for spiciness, which I wanted!
Located just off the main drag of London’s Chinatown, Mao Tai Kitchen specialises in cuisine from the Guizhou province in Southwest China. Here, they specialise in one taste – hot, hot and extremely hot. Spicy is the name of the game here with the occasional pickled vegetable providing a bit of a twist for the tastebuds. Personally, I love it and it makes for an exciting change for the palette with bold and intense flavours. However, what I really come to Mao Tai Kitchen for is their delightful selection of traditional hotpots and hand-pulled noodles. Tonight was no different as we started with the braised tofu hotpot and their signature Giuzhou noodles which are both formidable dishes I would not hesitate to recommend. Rounding out the meal were orders of the vegetable dumplings, pepper beef, stir-fried aubergine, potato & pepper and the braised spicy chicken which were all delicious even whilst playing a supporting role. If you’re not a fan of spicy food, then this is not for you however, that would be a loss because the food is genuine and quite the experience.
