Seeing as I had got…perhaps…a bit too ‘wasted’ we shall say, from the enticing Gay Ku Bar next door, my mates suggested I sobered up a tad. I’m really not keen on Chinese cusine (unlike everyone else surprisingly) but I was left with no choice due to where I was located. So obviously I went for something simple – special fried rice. At first I was a little bit thrown off by the price for something quite plain and basic but the quantity was very large and I was greatly pleased with how it tasted. I definitely feel compelled to come here again but for a dish more elaborate ;-)…Oh and that tub of rice sure did sober me up.
This restaurant makes me feel smug. On my approach along Lisle Street I invariably encounter hoards of unknowing people desperately looking for that hidden Chinatown gem, trying to weigh up who has the most window stickers, but with no real idea of how on earth to tell them apart. At this point I’m always so thankful for my knowledge of Mr. Kong. I know the place to go.For starters the wonderfully friendly staff always greet us with open arms, they sit us at our favourite tables, and remember our favourite dishes (of which there are many), though not at the expense of a bit of encouragement for us to try a few new things. This is definitely a restaurant in which you can try new things, and with their excellent prices you’d be mad not to test yourself a little. Yes they have all the stuff you’d expect (which I must say is beautifully prepared, free of the neon sauces dense with E numbers and MSG that characterise so many other restaurants in Chinatown), but what really keeps us coming back is the vast and imaginative menu that carves many paths for a culinary adventure.Paul Raymond may have been the King of Soho, but Kong is the King of Chinatown.
THE BEST. Been in business for almost 30 years. Superlative food. Ate dinner on three different occasions during a week vacation in January and all were memorable. These were all super: fried king prawn with hot/sweet sauce, fried scallop with seasonal vegetables, crab meat & sweet corn soup, fillet steak with black bean & chili, lettuce wraps with minced pork & oyster and ho fun Singapore style. I can’t wait to visit again. Tips: always packed- all three floors, line moves slowly, and friendly maitre-de & waiters.
Cracking food – Mr Kong is King. The menu is bewildering in length and you wonder how they keep the consistency up with all the dishes they make. But they do.This place is awesome. Much like a continental restaurant that can cook a proper creme brulee, a chinese restaurant that can cook a decent crispy spiced beef is always on a benchmark for quality and it’s delicious here. You might also like to try some of the pot cooked dishes. All the seafood is tasty and cooked with skill.
