Very innovative Japanese restaurant originated from Middle East. All the dishes are very well presented. And I love the set up of the matcha tiramisu. We had grilled edamame to start. The tempura prawn taco was delicious. We ordered Oliver maki, each one of them was delicious. We had the apple miso aubergine. That was yummy, and we felt that it would go very well with rice. So we ordered wagyu beef fried rice to go with it. They used brown rice instead of normal rice which is healthy, but not as much delicious as I would imagined. The matcha tiramisu was a must to order even just to take a picture. It was a very good experience and I love the iPad menu which provides pictures for each dish. I’m a very visual person so it helped me a lot when we made the order. The restaurant was not even half full when I was there on a sat night, which is surprising given it’s in soho. I’ll definitely come back if I’m in soho without any restaurant bookings.

With branches in Kuwait and Bahrain, it was pretty bold for the owners to decide to expand their sushi Middle Eastern empire to London. Good thing they did, because I finally got to satisfy my sushi craves. Wholly authentic Japanese sushi tends to take on a minimalist approach to food; I am far off from being a minimalist, especially when it comes to food. Oliver Maki blends an eclectic Mediterranean and often Mexican feel with fresh Japanese sushi and sashimi cuts. They refuse to serve soya sauce and pickled ginger which would be as absurd as a Mexican restauarant refusing to serve Guacamole. A risky move on their behalf, but they make it up with their own homemade olive-oil based sauce infused with what I guessed was soya sauce and togarashi, which frankly has made me like soya sauce less now. The shrimp tacos are simply to die for; never imagined wasabi and guacamole went so well together. A colorful feast pleasant both to the eye and the palate. Appreciate the bursting flavors of each bite. The tuna tartare was also impeccably prepared and had just the right zesty taste. Get the Oliver Maki roll plate and enjoy the makis slowly. Another bold move by adding truffle pieces to some of the makis, but still managing not to overpower the subtle freshness of the fish. The other sushi platters were just as delicious. An amazing experience all in all in a nice spot in Soho. You can’t but appreciate the boldness in everything that Oliver Maki does, as they gracefully mix an array of unaccustomed tastes without overpowering any of the ingredients. Bold and beautiful. 60-70 a person. Final Verdict: 9/10Follow me on londonarab_foodie

The food at Oliver Maki is not bad but sadly, everything else disappoints. Very mediocre service and no vibe setting make this new Soho sushi spot a pass in my book despite the tasty desserts. Their menu on an ipad is also one of the most aggravating things I have encountered lately. foodexpectations.com

Got attracted by the excellent presentation of Japanese fusion food, we decided to go for dinner. Kinda have high expectations on their food since the sushi Jews and the green tea tiramisu looked so nice! We doubt that the container of the sushi Jews is from muji since they sell the same thing. But was pretty disappointed after the meal. This place didn’t live up to our expectations except the display. It’s just the surface that looks good. The sushi wasn’t fresh enough. The only good thing should be the tiramisu, since it’s seldom in green tea flavoured.

Soho has got to be one of the highest restaurant turnover spots in London. Recently opened Oliver Maki demands attention with its inventive menu and eye-catching presentation. We had a tasting menu which overall was good but didn’t blow me away. The most interesting thing about it was maki made with an ume wrap instead of the typical nori (I imagine sushi wrapped in a fruit roll up would taste similar – in a good way). The highlight though were the desserts. A green tea tiramisu dressed up to look like a little potted plant and a deliciously caramelly pain perdu with baked apple, ice cream and popcorn.Overall Oliver Maki left me wanting to come back and see what else is on offer.
