Smokey smokey ……… Popped by this place on a whim it’s been years since I visited Chester so after a causal walk by the river I stumbled across this place and from the hive of activity outside (indoor and outdoor seating nice touch as its right by the picturesque river Dee) I thought I’d pop in the place was very busy inside and out always a good sign, we were advised the table would be an hour and 15 minutes, as we had not booked which was fine we were in no rush and rarely do you have to wait the estimated time at any restaurant so we were shown to the bar and grabbed a seat the bar has a good selection of drinks and shorts which was impressive and the bar staff are very knowledgeable as they were making drinks for other customers and talking about flavours etc which is always a good sign. We were served promptly and grabbed a seat at the bar and we were brought complimentary sales popcorn which was a nice touch. It did alarm me that there was numerous empty tables that were not cleared despite there being plenty of floor staff milling about and along with ourselves there were other people waiting too never the less we were enjoying our conversation and the time whittled away and we were shown to our table after around 50 minutes (well ahead of time). There was complimentary water and another bag of popcorn for our group which again is a nice touch. The decor is imitation American with booth seating and standalone tables I don’t think it pulls it off as the atmosphere is not of a typical American style BBQ joint/smokehouse its feels more like a sports bar (TVs everywhere) regardless we are here for the food. The menu is plenty full with the usual staples of brisket, baby back ribs, pulled pork, Mac and cheese, hot links etc etc as I judge a BBQ joint on meat quality, smoke rings on the meat and most importantly flavour baby !!!!! We ordered a couple of platters (I like to try everything ) for 2 persons each one for 35 (which I thought was cheap)and some fried pickles and some suicide buffalo wings to start and chilli cheese fries.I patiently awaited the meal the waiter was pleasant and made sure we were settled and topped up with drinks. The starters arrived promptly the fried pickles were tasty and the blue cheese sauce a nice touch the wings however were disappointing I love hot hot food so ordering the suicide hot wings (hottest sauce) would be good however they were very very bland no flavour just heat no after taste or hints of spice it was just heat which I don’t mind but I wasn’t all to impressed as the plates were cleared we had a couple more drinks and the mains arrived the platters looked great (see photo) but sadly that’s were it ended there was very little flavour and quite bland it was well cooked the evidenced smoke rings were there so show its been cooked slow and low the brisket fell apart and the short rib did too which is a great sign the pulled pork however was over salted to the point of extinction the rest of the dish was Joe average tbh including the ribs the hot links and the BBQ beans, the slaw was generic and the chilli cheese fries were average at best not real chilli cheese fries (plastic cheese no chilli but chillis and fries very strange)Also absent was any homemade signature sauces (BBQ staple) just a over over sugared BBQ sauce and shop brought hot sauce and mustard) pretty disappointing We swerved desert and got the bill paid and left.Would I go back prob not, all in all its not the worst but by far no where near the best I think the main focus should be flavour change the dry rubs as the flavours are not coming through which is a shame as the cooking of the meat was done well.If in London or surrounding Bodeans is a much better alternativeFor our travellers Reds in Manchester and surrounding is also a definite place to be Average at best there are a few better BBQ places that rank higher they are just not quite there yet so any chance of me going back has potentially gone up in smoke …….(excuse the pun)
Been here a few times now and always had a good experience. The platters are great if you like a good mix, but beware that the portions are pretty sizeable. Good selection too at the bar.Be sure to book in advance unless you want to sit outside.
Hickory’ Smokehouse is authentic American BBQ restaurant by the river in the historic city of Chester. Staff is helpfull and friendly. Sitting outside with a river view is amazing. They serve unlimited popcorn with the meals. Both the Swiss sausages and shrimps are delish. #sausages #schrimps #scampi #chips #hickorysmokehouse #chester #UK gezentianne.com
Awesome. We went to Hickorys on the 1st of March 2013 as my boyfriend had been once before and I have to say I absolutely loved it. We had Burnt Bits and Hot Links to start (shared) and had the platter between us to share for a main. We also ordered copious amounts of cocktails, all freshly made. We were bought water and popcorn as we sat down, this was a lovely touch. We had a private booth type table out of the way which I think made it as there were many tables in that night. I will definitely be going again and would highly recommend the food, drink and service.
Very nice food.. Myself and my fiance were visiting chester for one night and didn’t know the area. Found this restaurant through an app on my phone so we thought we’d try it out. Didn’t seem too expensive for what they were offering.Went inside and asked if we could get a table for two (saturday night you and with no booking we’d already turned down an hour and twenty minute wait at another restaurant). The waiter asked if we’d mind sitting at the kitchen bar which overlooked the preparation area of the kitchen. We said that was fine and he asked if we’d like to go a get a drink from the bar and they’d clean the space and call us over.We were seated at the bar which was a nice quirky area of the restaurant. The waitress brought over a bottle of water and a bowl of popcorn which I really like.We ordered a starter each. My fiance had the chicken and sweetcorn chowder (5) which came with sweetbread and I ordered the veggie nachos (6) (normal nachos but without the chilli) When the starters came I was quite overfaced by the nachos. Much too large for just one person. My fiance even had some of them too and we still didn’t finish them. For main course we had the sharing platter which was 30 between us. Again far too much food for two people.Service was brilliant, couldn’t fault them at all. Had plenty time to think about our orders. In fact we asked for a minute and had to call the waiter back ourselves because he’d been gone about 5minutes already.Great meal over all!!!
I was recommended this place by a friend so gave it a try as I fancied somewhere I hadn’t been before. Booked a table for 5:30 on a Sunday evening and arrived for 5:20, shown to our table promptly. I couldn’t help notice the quirky decoration which I liked a lot. The waitress came back over with water and popcorn (a nice touch) and given the drinks menu while being asked straight away what we wanted. I asked for a moment to look over the drinks menu. Within a minute the waitress was back so we quickly ordered our usual drinks rather than going for something different. Virtually the same happened with food menu. And I began to feel rather uncomfortable. The food came and was presented in a quirk way too. Tasted good too. Another waitress came to clear our plates before I’d even had chance to get halfway through my main. I quite liked the food here but the service leaves an awful lot to be desired. I’m not sure if their waitresses lack training or they had pressures on them to get as many customer through the tables as possible. Admittedly they were busy, but they shouldn’t have took my booking if they didn’t have the time or space for us. I’m not sure I’d go back as a result as there’s a lot of other places in Chester to choose from. Shame really.
Fantastic. What more can i say? Two hungry Geordies rolled up on Paddy’s day and it was packed. Told a 30min wait, start a tab at the bar. Few Amstel’s later and we are directed to our table. From where we were in the bar we could see the open kitchen and were drooling at the goodies lovingly churned out from there. Starter, we decided we wanted to try the nachos, at 9.50 they aint cheap, but i have to say tgey were fantastic, possibly the best ive had. Always a good sign when you realise they didnt use doritos. The chilli on top was perfect too. Main, keeping with the sharing theme we went for the platter, at 28 it sounded good. I would describe everything individually, but im knackered from the feast. Needless to say we didnt need the nachos and we couldnt finish it off! Staff are very friendly, service is quick, couldnt fault it really. We will be back before we have to leave for home!
