Relaxed and hearty, good meals and good ales. Service a little rushed, perhaps due to it being understaffed I would suggest, it means you can be waiting for your food a while, but the fine ale does fill the time. Nevertheless, on the food side it is pub-grub, as expected, but of adequate standard and will fill you up and line the stomach for an evening on the sauce, as everyone else in the merchant is there for drinking, not the food, I would suggest.
Since it’s complete refurbishment in 2008 to become The Merchant (previously Dixies) this bar has added much needed breadth to the bar option on battersea rise in CJ. It’s a mix between traditional bar and lively night spot and sports a decent menu of reasonably priced pub grub with sone interesting alternatives. The food is thoughtfully executed and good qualtity if a bit obvious but always satisfies. There are several local and world ales to try and there’s plenty of choice of bottled beers. The house wines are surprisingly good too. The staff and service here are first rate and really help the place to stand out. It’s busy every night so there’s always a great atmosphere. A first rate local (luckilly for me, anyway!) but beware – it gets really busy Fri/Sat nights so don’t expect a quiet pint!
