Under new management. The renewal of this old pub is very promising. Wide selection of craft beers on tap, warm atmosphere and friendly service are all positive attributes. Now serves freshly prepared pizzas. On a beer visit this time but will be back and check out the food next time.

Best North American food in South London by a mile. Have eaten at The Coach and Horses several times over the last few months (its my local pub – with some decent Czech lager, helpfully) since new owners took over, and i cannot speak too highly of it.They mostly serve North American staples – burgers, ribs, pulled pork and the like – with very little of your standard British pub fare. Which, frankly, works brilliantly.Chips, served dusted with herbs and in portions Mid-Westerners wouldn’t look down on are crisp, flavoursome and come with the skin still on. Compared to the average efforts you tend to find on Clapham High Street, they’re fantastic. The burgers, made with beef from a locally famous butcher are noticeably better quality meat than your average restaurant. Juicy, meaty and perfectly cooked (Canadian style, apparently, so if you order ’em rare, they won’t come out half burnt like most of the places you go to in London) they’re terrific, and a nice alternative to the Hache and GBK’s that are everywhere in Clapham. Its the Grilled Cheese sandwich with Pulled Pork that is the Coach and Horses’ real meal of genius though (although the ribs fight hard for my heart – perfectly cooked both times i’ve had them). Immaculately cooked, with the two cheeses balanced brilliantly with the rich, meaty pulled pork. Its hard to properly describe how good it is – easily a match for North America’s best, and far better than anything i’ve tried in the UK. And, of course, covered in chips…The service is great, the atmosphere’s fun, and they’ve just started doing buy one get one free burgers on some week days… all of which, with the pretty reasonable prices, means trouble for my already expanding waistline…Worth a journey to Clapham, then, (not least because its a few minutes off the high street, so away from the area’s sometimes pain in arse clientele) especially if you get the grilled cheese!
