Surly service taken to ridiculous extremes. We were taken to Gastro by a friend who had previously had a good time there. Despite 4 wait staff for about 20 diners it took 25 minutes for our order to be taken then another hour for the food to arrive. Our wine was forgotten, as were our side dishes and the staff were more interested in talking to each other than looking after us. While we were waiting others arrived and were looked after in quite a different way with orders taken straight away and their food delivered within 15 minutes. I have seen other reviews saying that the service is typically French but that is a slur on the French. The poor quality of the service at Gastro is in a class all of its own. You cannot be that bad by accident. The food was merely ok.

Good French Brasserie. This has an authentic feel with the dcor and French staff. However, the food can be inconsistent. It is better to go for a simple lunch or just have a drink. I like the atmosphere of the place, though I tend to avoid Clapham these days.

Pleasant but overpriced… Taken by the many positive online recommendations, we ventured into this charming and cosy French bistro on a well-known Clapham backstreet. A group of seven of us chose the rustic communal table at the back of the restaurant, and were well attended to by the somewhat brooding Gallic waiters. Wine was quaintly served in small glasses and we helped ourselves to a mound of crusty table bread. The food in general received mixed reviews. those of us who chose the deep-fried camembert as a starter were disappointed by the consistency of the outer coating and the cheese itself, which tasted not dissimilar to that which you could buy in the chilled foods section at Iceland. The accompanying salad was bitter and tossed in a non-descript dressing. The escargots were however a hit, in a tasty garlic based sauce as was the staple but satisfying soup (leek and potato). Main courses too were varying, with the steak and frites being below average , the monkfish fricassee too creamy and filling too be fully enjoyed and the mussels being delicious. The meal – starter, main and two desserts, with a glass and half of wine each-came to 35 each.My overall impression was that this restaurant, with its quirky decor and Parisian atmosphere is overpriced and a bit hit and miss in the quality of its food to be worth a second visit.

Disappointing food. Was at Gastro last night, top venue, layout, big table at the back for a friend’s birthday. 12 of us. Waiter was very friendly and efficient, but the food as very disappointing. It was a shame because Gastro could be one of the great Frnech bistros of South London.Instead it seems they’ve got complacent. The menu is old and tired. I had the french onion soup to start: tasteless, soft onions, 3 bits of stale bread, and a sprinkling of cheese. All who had it felt the same. For mains the lamb shank in cassoulet, a classic! Mais non. The lamb was far too moist wet in fact, and again tasteless. Others had steak frites, the frites were laced with salt, hard and luke warm. The vin was good – some Viognier and some Pinot Noir, but a little overpriced: 25 per bottle. All in all great atmosphere, but they should update the menu and put a bit of love into their food!

Terrible place. This hole of a place is appalling. Tepid water, mash so watery and seasonless that you would have thought the worst it could be was tasteles but no it managed to taste like sludge with a crust. The Sunday roast was terrible and and once agian crimes against the potato was strongly in evidence. Don’t go.
