A great local restaurant for brunch. They have all the typical dishes from pancakes to eggs royal. A great advantage is the location, hidden from the main streets in a cute little courtyard. All of the ingredients used are organic and taste great. Unfortunately they do not have gluten free bread for the breakfast, however you can have really good gluten free pastries and brownies to make up for it.
Nice place in a back yard. Slightly chilly and drafty in winter. Probabaly great during summer and warmer months. Food was good (j+a breakfast sandwich). Blackpudding was especially good here.
A little cafe hidden down the back alleys of clerkenwell I was recommended this spot by a local who praised the ‘community’ vibe and ability to grab a table no matter the time of day. The tucked away nature of this spot immediately drew me in- I would never have just stumbled upon it, meaning solid world of mouth praise is required to know it’s there. I settled in with a coffee and the supplied paper in wait of my company for brunch. My latte was a little too foamy for my liking but delicious, I easily ordered a second. I had the J+A breakfast sandwich, the perfect hangover cure of carbs, sausage, bacon and egg. And tomato relish. Amazing relish. My pal had the veggie breakfast (with a side of bacon- go figure…). It was a tasty collection of mushrooms, spinach, egg and toast. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our brunch and the atmosphere is cool, calm and collected. Just how I like it. Enough bustle to be buzzing but no so much so that you’re in a hurry to escape to peace and quite. The menu is pretty basic with nothing particularly exotic, however it manages to hit the mark with all dishes. All in all, a definitely local staple! londonbrekkies.wordpress.com
On a Sunday morning, this cafe just off Clerkenwell road feels a bit in the middle of nowhere. We had walked up through the Farringdon/Smithfield area of city, past many new, highly rated restaurants and a few very fashionable chain eateries (most of which were shut because it was Sunday and very quiet). Then, we went through a passage into a small courtyard we found J + A caf and I half expected us to be the only people in there! But I was very wrong; downstairs was packed and we were taken upstairs which was also busy. The exposed brick, minimalist look with school chairs and mismatch tables allows for a relaxed atmosphere. The menu has a distinct Irish feel to it and the fry-up was no exception as it included boxty (an Irish potato pancake) and Clonikilty black pudding. For 9.50 you also got a sausage, 2 rashers of bacon, two fried eggs, half a large flat mushroom, grilled tomato and sourdough toast. The quality of the ingredients really defines what this place is about. It appears they have put a lot of effort into sourcing from small suppliers as it evident from their website, which lists out where the ingredients come from. Even down to the Tiptree brown sauce (which is much sweeter than HP and pairs extremely well with the black pudding), it seems everything has been researched and considered. So if I was to find fault, the eggs were well cooked, but maybe a little small, the bacon could have been crispier to bring out the flavour and I would always want beans on the plate. But overall I was very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed it!This is set up to be a brunch spot at the weekend, with a broad breakfast/brunch menu serving until 3pm. I was dining with friends who had a variety of dishes, all of which received high praise. lordofthefries1.blogspot.com
People clearly know about this place and by 1 pm the place was full and people were having to ‘bunk up’ on tables – a practice my boyfriend detests. I’m not too hot on it either considering I hate hearing other people eat. I find it even difficult to hear the mastication of my nearest and dearest, let alone strangers. Anyway, so the place gets busy and it isn’t even right in the middle of the thoroughfare – you have to go down a little alley to get to it. I almost thought I was in the wrong place. They have several sandwiches that they always serve and then they also have a soup or stew special, a pie special and several jacket potato specials on the day, written up on the board on the wall. I ordered the smoked cheddar, bacon, sundried tomato and apple potato. Stephen had the chicken roast chicken sandwich. It was like a proper sandwichy treat you’d make for yourself at home if you could be bothered to roast a whole chicken. My baked potato was also pleasing. I worried when it came out that there wouldn’t be enough topping for the size of the potato. But I managed to eke it out perfectly. I could taste the smokiness of the cheese and they hadn’t gone over the top with the amount so it wasn’t a greasy, claggy mess on the potato. and there was more bacon than it looks like there was from the picture. The only weird thing was the apple – I don’t think it fit all that well with the rest of it, but I like apple so it was no biggie. I was more than happy to eat it. Even the token bit of salad on the side was pretty good. The food wasn’t groundbreaking – it’s what you’d expect from a place calling itself a cafe – but it was done really well. I can’t wait to go back for the pancakes! jaminaward.wixsite.com
Food: *****Service: ****Value: *****Overall: *****In true American style, Sunday Brunch has become one of the hottest trends in London. Last weekend, we spent hours filtering through endless lists of Best Brunch in London and finally decided to try J+A Caf in Clerkenwell. Tucked away in a small alleyway off Clerkenwell Road, J+A is spread over two floors of a warehouse style building, with a pleasant outdoor area, perfect for summer socialising.Upon arrival, we were directed upstairs and the 3 of us were sat at a long canteen style table with plastic chairs. The seating was reminiscent of a school canteen and the exposed brickwork created a cool, laid back vibe perfect for a lazy Sunday Brunch. The brunch menu is varied and consists of popular choices such as Eggs Benedict, and Pancakes, as well as Homemade Granola, and Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Eggs on Irish Soda Toast. It took a while to decide but we opted for 2x Eggs Benedict (6.50) and 1x Eggs Royale (9.50). The buttered muffin was toasted perfectly and the poached eggs felt very fresh. The eggs, muffin, ham (Eggs Benedict) and salmon (Eggs Royale) were complimented by a very flavoursome hollandaise sauce. The combination of flavours was very pleasing. Unfortunately, as a result of polishing off the generously sized mains, we were too full to try one their delicious looking cakes (Definitely next time!)Aside from the satisfying food selection, the staff were friendly and we didnt feel rushed. We look forward to returning to J+A and can officially include it on our unofficial Best Brunch in London list. theediblediary.blogspot.com
Delightful! Big cosy cafe hidden away in a nice little alley. Ideal for a sunny day – loads of sitting spaces outside. Great coffee and some delicious cakes (narrow choice but massive portions). Food looks great too. Staff to customer ratio just fine and everyone very friendly.
