Palatino does the food of Rome. I used to share an office with a native Roman who always said that offal was the most important component of Roman food, so was glad to see some on the menu here.I started with the rigatoni with veal pajata. That’s a tomato and meat sauce made with tripe of unweaned calf. Supposedly the milk and rennet in the intestines cooks into a cheesy mass. I thought this would be an adventurous thing to order, but it tasted a lot like ordinary bolognese but with a more melting meat texture. We were a table of three, and the winning starter was the antipasto of anchovy, stracciatella and toast. This was a bruschetta spread with with rich young buffalo cheese, topped with good quality anchovy and lemon rind, drizzled with plenty of excellent fruity olive oil. My other companion’s order of gnocchi a la romana (ie no potato) served with fried sage and brown butter was excellent too.I did order the best main. I stuck to the Roman theme and went for the vegetarian option of artichoke which was prepared alla Giudia, or in the style of Rome’s Jewish ghetto. Double deep fried, so that leaves were like crisps, but with a soft tender heart. This was served with borlotti beans prepared with quite a lot of garlic and dressed with chopped radicchio. The order of saltimbuca was really good too, although its owner complained she could have done with more of the accompanying spinach. An order of chicken and pistachio meatballs on polenta was comforting but probably the least exciting of our mains. We shared a rather restrained dessert. The almond and lemon cake with ice cream and rhubarb was a very nice crumbly cake where ice cream added moisture. The rhubarb didn’t really add anything to the dish. We all loved the almond flour the cake though, with its crispy browned edges. Most wines available by the glass, half liter carafe, or bottle. The house red was 22 by the bottle. In cold weather it’s probably best to ask not to be seated by the huge picture window. The people in the booth by the attractive window had a space heater on the floor placed next to them. Good acoustics and a cool design led decor. The kitchen is open.
