How should one rate a restaurant where everything I ordered was seriously yuck, but where my companion ate quite well? It’s a slightly noisy City Boy joint, though the acoustics are actually very good. Service was attentive.Let’s start with my companion’s light meal of two starters which was rather good. Mushrooms and ricotta on toast were tasty sauteed chestnut mushrooms, on thick toast spread with ricotta. His other starter of meatballs, cannellini beans, feta and pine nuts was was really good too. Creamy cheese sauce swimming with veal meatballs and white beans. The mince had a nice loose texture indicating a light hand was used while forming the meatballs. We shared a side of sauteed spinach which was nicely cooked in terms of texture but under seasoned. No salt, garlic, or lemon. Just spinach and butter. My crispy duck salad with cucumber, wonton, peanut and hoisin was awful. Duck was rendered totally tasteless somehow. Unappealing bits of wilted pak choi were in my bowl. Horriblly over sweet dressing was dominated by metallic tasting hoisin. Oh, the peanuts hadn’t been toasted either. The only bits that were nice were thick wedges of charred cucumber and the deep fried wonton skins. Moral of the story: avoid anything Asian inspired here.I also ordered cowboy fries advertised on the menu as being dressing with honey, chilli and garlic. These were hard, undercooked fries dressed in a commercial barbecue sauce. Bleck. When the hostess asked about our food I complained about the undercooked fries. She took them back to the kitchen and offered another portion. They obligingly let me change my order to Roman fries dressed with parmesan, rosemary and truffle oil. These were hard and undercooked too and lacked seasoning. The dressing of parmesan and rosemary was a little sprinkle on top added as an afterthought. Second lesson: Don’t order the fries. If I come back I will stick to pub classics here. The burgers being delivered to other tables looked awesome.
