Have you ever seen that episode of How I met your Mother where Barney and Robin emerge on the street from a secret underground club? This is what a literal version may look like. This little space in Aldwych has been magnificently converted into a basement bar. Once you walk down the lit up stairway towards a thrilling ‘hell’ with angels as staff, you’ll be met by a friendly bouncer and a heavy-looking ‘cellar-door’. Entry is free, meaning that you can enjoy their live acts without charge – Wednesday’s is a drag cabaret. Inside it’s very intimate, and we felt everyone’s eyes on us when we first walked in. The place is decorated with deep reds and a clever use of mirrors to help it look bigger than it actually is. I can imagine it filling up quickly on weekends. Cocktails are well made, and cost you around 9. Great venue if you’re looking for a unique bar experience!
Cellar Door is a surprisingly good venue which makes excellent use of the limited space under Aldwych which was once a gent’s loo. The tiny bar serves great cocktails in china cups and the dimly lit seating area, though very compact, is sufficiently broken up by ingenious furniture that it is possible to have a slightly private conversation. If you’re very lucky you might get some live music, performed from a stage about the size of a small family dining table. The jazz cabaret which played whilst I was visiting Cellar Door once was fantastic, and made all the more surprising when the two musicians bowed awkwardly and pulled a small curtain around themselves and the stage to indicate that the performance was over. A great little venue.
