Probably one of the best wine bars on this side of town. This place has got a huge heritage. Love this place every time I have visited. A bit disappointed though to see additions of beer to the bar menu in a traditional wine bar. The Cork and Bottle platter is highly recommended
Whilst walking through Leicester Square, my boyfriend and I found Cork and Bottle! Such a lovely little find! Very easy to miss, this quaint mystery is hidden below a door on the approach to Leicester Square, opposite Zoo Bar. When you walk down the old fashioned, iron staircase it’s like you take a step back in time and into France! You enter a cave like cellar filled with mismatch tables, candles, french decor, a cheese bar and A LOT of wine! The staff here are friendly. We met the owner who clearly lived for this restaurants. You could see his passions lie with Wine and cheese, and most definitely fine dining cuisine as he fed us tasters and informed us about the wines on offer. It was lovely to see such passion. We only visited for a drink, which were not too badly priced in fact! We took a look at the menu whilst relaxing on a table sipping at our drinks and it looked interesting! A variety of French dishes on offer, somewhere we would like to eat one day! Promising restaurant for future visits!
Dared to opt for the famous ham and cheese pie – a rich choice but wasn’t disappointed! Very pleased with the help with choosing wine accompaniments, as I know very little about wine. Service with a smile, will definitely go back!
Love it!. Located between Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, the Cork & Bottle is the perfect spot to chow-down either before or after a visit to the theatre. It also provides a marvelous escape from the restless human flora and fauna and general pandemonium that are part and parcel of Piccadilly. You enter a diminutive doorway, descend a narrow spiral staircase, and find yourself in a cozy subterranean, slightly claustrophobic space dedicated to the fruit of the vine. Here businessmen savor a bottle (or two or three) of their favorite liquid libation while couples commune quietly over lunch and a glass (or several) from the ever-changing wine list before heading off to a matinee. The usual hordes of sneaker-clad tourists (of whatever nationality) are – thankfully – conspicuous by their absence. And there’s good food here as well as good wine; and it is – given the establishment’s primo location – quite reasonably priced. Casual international selections range from open-faced grilled sandwiches to burgers to the establishment’s famous ham & cheese pie to an appetizing assortment of salads, pts and terrines. If you’re attending the theatre and in the market for a restaurant that is decidedly un-touristy, in the center of the action but still far from the madding crowd, you’ve come to the right address. http://www.artfuldiner.com/london.html
Our Little Secret…. For local’s in the know, this is one of the best places to go in Leister Square if you want a good meal at a reasonable price. The wine list is wonderfully extensive and insane and makes for a good glug after work, before or after a movie or the theatre. It is small, subterreanean and gets hot and crowded especially at weekends, so only tell friends you really really like and maybe we can keep this our little secret!
