I visit London quite often, it has become a bit of a tradition to visit The Old Shades after venturing in with a friend after being in the pub next door. Before around a month ago I would have recommended it to anyone.I took my Mum, who has celiacs disease. She is unable to have gluten and wheat ext – it makes her extremely ill. It says on the menu, in black and white, that The Old Shades is ‘proud’ to cater for such. So we went in, and it just became clear that this was not the case. They have perhaps 4 things on the menu that are gluten free – none of which make a meal. Despite saying they can make sandwiches and such, my Mum was told she could eat sandwiches ‘at her own risk’.We must have spent almost 30 minutes going back and forth, the waitress was very nice, but she had to go in and out in and out of the kitchen – no chef, no manager or owner bothered to come out to speak to my Mother. Disappointed, she ordered a plain chicken salad with some thankfully safe chips. I wanted to leave, but she gets so embarrassed or feels like a burden, she knew my girlfriend and I liked it there, so she insisted on staying. She insisted that a chicken salad would be fine, and so we all ordered. My Mum received some plain strips of chicken, literally in the middle of a bowl lined with lettuce – no salad, just a bowl lined lettuce. Oh, and some anchovies that she never asked for and had to pick out. No tomatoes, no cucumber, no anything – just a bowl of lettuce leaves, probably 5 in all lining the bowl, some plain strips of chicken, and anchovies. I was outraged. What’s more, when she excused herself from the table to go to the toilet, I asked for the bill, intending to take it to the manager to complain. But on the way back, she paid. She paid almost 50 for 3 meals – her ”chicken salad” was going to be around 11. Can you imagine. She told the man behind the bar that it was somewhat excessive for what she got, and he defensively said she ordered a gluten free salad. She asked him if tomatoes and cucumber and all that had gluten in it, and he just said ‘I suppose not’ and ‘I guess I can take a bit off the bill then – if you want’. Like SHE was to blame. My Mum has a disease, not a preference. And they said they were proud to cater for allergens, including gluten free. They could make things, they said. Still with a couple of pounds (not a lot really) it still came up to almost 50.She paid for a rubbish service, and a rubbish meal. I was furious, and hurt and I sent a massive email to The Old Shades when we returned home after out trip. It’s been a month, and they can’t be bothered to reply.BAD service. BAD food. LIARS. OUT FOR WHAT THEY CAN GET. DO NOT GO – I NEVER WILL AGAIN.
Typical look of a London Pub but still has its own character. The interior is a classic Art Deco with so much attention to detail in the theme. From furniture to flooring and light fittings and wall art- it really feels like stepping back in time- at the same time facilitating a warm welcoming comfort! Service was friendly and efficient. The food was simple, hearty, tasty and fresh with generous portions! The burger patty was thick, tender and juicy with very fresh meat- cooked medium. The chips were crunchy on the outside & slightly soft on the inside just perfect and highly addictive!! The sausage and mash was also one of the best kind of a home cooked meal- sausages were tender with a perfect bite on a bed of velvety mashed potatoes, balanced with the braised red cabbage and the elements were united with the warmth and full body flavor of the dark gravy sauce. What a lovely authentic food experience! : )
The food as very yummy and the service was good, even though the guy who waited at air table was clearly in training. We like the place itself and it’s at a great location. It wasn’t too pricey either.
Not that great, service terrible and food so so. My family ordered fish and chips and hamburgers which the waitress said they were famous for. With the description as fries cooked 3 times I was excited. It took about 45 minutes for the food to come out. It looked good on the surface but the fries cooked 3 times were only fried once. They were soggy and cool. I bit into the hamburger and it was RARE and cool in the middle on mine. The other was medium rare. I asked the waitress if this is the way it is served and she said NO. She will get the cook to heat them up. I thought that’s not right. She took them back and the cook told her she will make them all over. Even though there were other hamburgers coming out (which they should’ve gave us and pushed back the others) we had to wait 20+ minutes. They were great and fries were closer to cooked 3 times. The problem was that all the others were done eating already. They ran out of soup de jour and gave us something else which we did not want. We had to ask many times for ketchup, never had the dishes cleared from our table. The only thing that came quickly was the bill.
