I was put off by the queue of the stalls but luckily it went down pretty quickly. So I ordered buttermilk fried chicken bap with fries which cost 8 (seems to be the going rate in this market). The chicken was crunchy on the outside but juicy on the inside, the sauce was really good but I think there wasn’t enough slaw. Overall it’s nice but it doesn’t drive me crazy… Btw, the main reason I gave it a lower rating is because the seller was grabbing food and taking money without removing his gloves, hygiene is important for me!

The best buttermilk fried chicken you can ever have! Crunchy, juicy, tender and spicy, all fitted in a perfect bun. They are so renowned that there is always a queue no matter the weather, but is absolutely worth the wait. On top of that they are among the friendliest trader out there and is a pleasure to deal with them.

Fast service. This is my top third favourite burger ever!!! Buttermilk fried chicken nap with Korean hot sauce!! I love spicy burgers!! It’s a bit messy to eat but totally worth it just make sure you have wet wipes, napkins and a drink when it’s too hot for you 😀

Streetfood-mania is currently in overdrive in London and has been so for the past few years with seemingly everyone wanting to realise their dream of sharing their culinary skills with the world. It seems like every market you go to now, whether old or new, is unveiling a new trader who has something unique to offer to the scene. However, there remains those precious few who can be considered a London streetfood pioneer and who, at the time, created a product so incomparable that even to this day, they are held above the rest. One such trader is Spit and Roast with their insane buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with Korean hot sauce and coleslaw. I first came across these guys about 3 years ago and just at the start of the streetfood scene exploding at a local market in Brockley, South London – a day I still remember quite vividly. Arriving at this school carpark kinda in the middle of suburbia, there was nothing to suggest that there would be anything particularly special to be found. But then there it is, parked in their now iconic corner under the trees – the Spit and Roast van. Reading the burger’s description, you can’t help but be drawn to it but it’s not until that first bite where you understand how good it really is. The chicken is always consistently juicy with the buttermilk ensuring it is always silky and tender. Combining perfectly with their signature Korean hot sauce (which I wish they would bottle) and coleslaw, you will soon find yourself in a trance with the burger seemingly disappearing before your very eyes. However, the guys at Spit and Roast are no one-trick ponies as equally as formidable is their spit roast chicken served fresh from the rotisserie to order. Paired with a generous helping of chips and it’s enough to make anyone’s day. But for me, it will always be the buttermilk fried chicken, which I still credit as one of the defining items that got me hooked onto the streetfood scene. If you have the good fortune of seeing these guys trade, don’t pass them up – they are worth waiting in any line, rain or shine. Just simply exceptional. I first tried Spit & Roasts beautiful deep fried buttermilk chicken on a gloriously sunny day at Bishopsgate Market last year. I could not believe I had not tried it before! Since moving south of the river I am within easy reach of the weekly Brockley Market where Spit & Roast always reside so I can now get my fix every couple of weeks. The chicken is always cooked to perfection, never dry. Its served in a bap, topped with coleslaw and their own Korean hot sauce. They are very generous with the chicken so its a challenge to keep it all together, but thats always a good challenge to have!I have to admit that Ive only ever had the buttermilk chicken as its just so good and I can never bring myself to order anything else. And now they bottle their hot sauce Im even happier and have one happily sat in my fridge.Buttermilk fried chicken is on menus everywhere at the moment, but in my opinion no one does it better and Im always left a little disappointed that I ordered it elsewhere. If you havent tried Spit & Roast go! dalton-banks.co.uk
