Too twee for me. A sweet family run restaurant with a homely feel (perhaps a little too twee in parts). There is a monthly set menu (with no specials) and an average 45 price tag for four courses plus coffee. Personally I found the menu and food to be a little old fashioned and lacking in inventiveness – despite the price tag this is not contemporary/fine dining. I started with the ‘asparagus bouchee’ – which was a puff pastry case with perfectly cooked asparagus in a butter sauce – There were no other discernible flavours but it was tasty. The sorbet was too sweet to be a palate cleanser although had a nice pink grapefruit flavour. For mains i had ‘Sole Veronique’, the fish was cooked well, but it was rather swimming in cream sauce which had little discernible flavour of wine etc it was ‘decorated’ with little crescents of puff pastry – can’t help thinking braised fennel would have been a better accompaniment, especially when following puff pastry starter. My fellow diners had the steak and lamb – both felt the standard not worthy of the price tag. The side vegetables were frankly poor – big lumps of steamed/boiled salsify, decorative carrot slices and undercooked leeks swimming in cream. The Chocolate and Brioche Pudding i had for dessert was a stodgy lump, but came with lovely rum and raisin ice-cream. We had an enjoyable evening, the staff are very attentive but can’t honestly say the quality of food lived up to the reputation.
