Very Disappointed !!!. For my husbands birthday we decided to have a meal at Widow Cullens Well , only to be told on our arrival at 7.15pm ish was that there was a pre booked party in of 15 and by the time that they have chosen their meals there wouldnt be ANY FOOD left.. How very disappointing , Surely if they knew there was going to be a large party why couldnt they have sorted this out prior. The meals had come highly recommended and we had travelled from Newcastle Upon Tyne for the weekend so we still never got to try the meals .
Great pub, the new management have sorted out the issues. Sometime last year the management of the pub was changed, this has sorted otu the issues with some members of staff being rude. The new staff are wonderful, and this combined with the low sam smiths prices (on draft beer, bottles and spirits can be a little pricey.)I havent tried the food, but the bar snacks (nuts etc.) are reasonably priced and tasty. One thing to mention is like all sam smiths pubs, no branded beer, its all their own brand or a few limited suppliers. This is what makes the beer so cheap! Generally these days the crowd is pretty diverse, from students to professionals to fitters, and there is usually a warm atmosphere to the place. The only problems I have found is that its all the way up steep hill, and it closes at 11 🙁
Lovely place for lunch. We like Lincoln but don’t often visit because we have never found a decent pub there. We took a chance on going into Widow Cullen’s Well as recent reviews rated it quite highly. I’m glad we did because it’s such a pleasant place to eat. We were welcomed by a young lady behind the bar who was relaxed and friendly, we enjoyed the food and Sam Smiths beer, and it was interesting just looking at the way the place has been restored. It’s a sympathetic mixture of old features such as exposed beams and wooden floorboards, plus antique-looking furniture and rich fabrics, and newer features. There’s an open fire on the other side of the bar, making it cosy and welcoming. The atmosphere during our visit was relaxed and friendly and we really felt they were glad to see us.The menu has a good range of dishes, mostly typical pub food such as steak and ale pie, with some more out-of-the ordinary meals. We spent less than 20 for two meals and two drinks, and the food was good and served attractively – a considerable improvement on our last visit to another old establishment not very far from this one, which was disappointing and expensive. There is, of course, the well at the back of the house too, which, according to staff, looks particularly interesting in the evening when it’s lit up. We will definitely visit the place again and I plan to take friends there soon. Definitely worth a visit.
Back again last night!. To be honest, we go at least 3 times per month, usually on a Thursday night as its just a great place to meet and chat with friends, the venue is lovely and the drinks are both great quality and dirt cheap. We went last night after a curry elsewhere, so did not eat, but we did have a few drinks. The range of Sam Smiths bottled beers are my new passion and I particularly enjoy the Cherry Beer and the Oatmeal Stout. Worth a bash. I also had a Sam Smiths Wheat Beer, as good as any Heffer or Hogaarden. The place was buzzing and quite full of an eclectic crowd from students to pensioners and all in between. Great place!31 Jul, 2009Samuel Smiths. This is a brilliant place. Easily the best pub in Lincoln, but not the best for grub. I love the fusion of very old traditional and modern design and features, in my opinion its a perfect example of modern redevelopment keeping traditional elements. I know the pub next door doesn’t agree. The food is not all that special but is fine. But its all about the beer! I am a big fan of Sam Smiths and think its the best beer going. Its ridiculously cheap yet fantastic. Old Brewery Bitter, Organic Lager, Tadcaster Stout or Organic Cider – Its first class!Look out for the glass covered well on the way to the loo!Brilliant.
Not Surprised it’s Empty. A friend and I had lunch here today, having been attracted by a reasonable looking menu.First thing we saw was the notice on the door about people ‘wondering’ around and stating that the pub is not a tourist attraction. Seemed rather unfriendly. However, we ordered our meals from a pleasant enough young lady. The next surprise was that they don’t take credit cards, rather inconvenient if you’re spending a lot. Then we found that they won’t allow tabs. We waited a very long time for the food considering how empty the place was. When the food arrived it turned out to be very mediocre. On leaving we engaged one of the staff about the misspelling of ‘wandering’ on the notice and its unfriendliness. She said that they had a lot of problems with people coming in to just use their toilets or to look at the well. I can understand that it is annoying for a pub when people just make use of the toilets, but looking at the well – I find it odd that they should object to that. It gets people in who, if they feel welcome, might stay or return for a drink or food. You can’t afford to be surly given the amount of competition in this area. The buiding is a gem, pity the food and atmosphere don’t do it justice.
Rudest Pub in Lincoln. This is a beautiful pub that has been completely ruined by the unbelievably rough and rude management. I live in Uphill Lincoln and have had the most unbelievelby awful experiences in this pub. I walked in one day with a dear friend who is a bit older than I am- I am 40 and she is 60. We popped in just after lunch to take a look around and to see if we might want to order lunch. A very rough and crude older man appeared behind the bar and asked us what we wanted. I responded that we were looking around to figure out if we wanted to stay for lunch. He had an absolute fit- although there was no one in the pub at all. He started shouting that this pub is not a tourist attraction and that we should get out. I was so shocked and appalled. Almost immediately, an older women appeared and joined in the abuse. When I tried to defend myself that we were only taking a peek around to see if we wanted to stay, she started in with how we needed to get out and that she and her partner would not take any abuse from us. What an absolute laugh- that we were abusing them!!I told my 27 year old daughter the story, and on her next visit from the US (we are Americans) we stopped in around lunch on a weekday to exactly the same reception. Unreal. To make matters ever worse- if that is possible, I called Sam Smiths to complain. I told the whole story. The woman on the phone was very defensive and never apologized for the rude and disgusting service. I asked for a written response to my complaint- never heard a peep from them. Have also heard from local people that this establishment is known for drawing a rough, mean crowd. My advise, unless you want to be abused, avoid this pub at all costs!!!
