Great place for meals prior to visit to the Emirates Stadium. Busy Italian, large portions at reasonable prices. Modern interior, good service from attentive staff. Pizza ???? if you are really hungry. Good wine list and Italian beers.
Unable to book a table at our go-to local pizza place, we bravely ventured to a different Italian establishment on a ravenous pizza-seeking rampage one Thursday evening. Il Bacio is a typical, reasonably priced pizza place with a predictable menu, bland but inoffensive dcor but really lovely staff. I ordered the Napoli pizza which (and peeeerhaps I should have seen this coming) was far too salty. Salt capers, salty olives and salty anchovies!! It was still quite tasty but after the first couple of slices I noticed my hands had started to prune and wrinkle, another slice and my whole body was shrinking and drying out like a sun-dried tomato! In this life or death situation I was forced to indulge in a number of rather delicious Sardinian beers in order to dilute the salty dish and save myself from turning into a human raisin. There is no free-range meat which ruled out the majority of the menu for me. Also no commitment to sustainable seafood so best to use an online guide before you order seafood (fishonline.org is good!). In short; mediocre but not bad food, tasty beer, friendly staff.
Il Bacio is a pretty textbook Italian with pretty textbook Italian fare. Now my go-to tactic when eating out is to find the menu, find the mains, not bother reading any descriptions and look to the far right side for that glorious ‘V’ that means ‘go for it dude, you can eat me’…veggies beware this will not work here! I had a ‘Vegetariana’, unsurprisingly that’s the veggie pizza; weirdly no ‘V’ though…even more bizarrely the one with anchovies did have the golden ‘V’ for go. Anyway, I digress, the food was OK…it looked great but tasted a little bit muted. To my mind a great pizza has flavour bursting out of its delicious doughy seams onto your tongue, this one’s flavour will sneak into your mouth without you really noticing. The staff were great though, moving us to a bigger table when our party grew and they had a really delicious Sardinian beer on called Ichnusa, go drink some if you get a chance. All in all OK…no that’s not fair, slightly better than OK.As a footnote, we went on an Arsenal game night and had to eat from a ‘game night’ menu. This might not mean anything but in my experience that tends to mean ‘not quite as good as normal’.
Il Bacio, Blackstock Rd, Highbury. Il Bacio at Blackstock Road at 184 Blackstock Rd, Tel: 020 7 226 3339, has become something of a local institution in Highbury. It is an informal, modern and friendly restaurant with a glass fronted exterior and laminate wooden floors. There is a large flat screen TV on the back wall for customers and staff to keep an eye on the football. The restaurant is a walking distance from Arsenals Emirates Stadium and making a reservation in advance is recommended, especially on match days. The owners of Il Bacio are from the island of Sardinia and ingredients such as the flour for the pizza dough, mozzarella, cured meats, sausages and olives are imported directly from the region. The range of starters consists of a selection of firm favourites sprinkled with a few Sardinian specials such as Antipasto Sardo (a mix of cured Sardinian meats and cheese) or carta musica which translates as music paper bread, due to its thinness and crunchy texture. For main, there is a selection of meat, fish and pasta dishes available but the pizza takes centre stage. The pizza menu is extensive and the pizzas themselves are generous in size and delicious which is evidence of the meticulous attention paid to the sourcing of quality ingredients. The wine list is comprehensive in representing the various regions of Italy, including a white and minerally Vermentino and a robust red Cannonau, which are grape varieties indigenous to Sardinia. To finish, choose from a selection of fresh or frozen desserts. A favourite of mine is the zabaglione, a heavenly combination of eggs, sugar and Marsala beaten by hand by the dedicated chef to an ethereal tasting foam and served in a tall glass.
Great pizzas and excellent Sardinian specialities. Shame about the TV.
It is our friendly neighborhood favourite, always great, always friendly – there is a reason why this place is always busy!
