I have been to Medcalf several times, food is very consistent. classic pub food with a nice twist. not shouting out but down to earth and good. I take my steak quite seriously and their steak is i’d say on a level with the ones you get in a good bistro in Paris. I asked for medium rare and that’s what I had. that’s rare in my opinion in London for this price range. friendly staff.
Rustic & Comfort. Sunday lunch at the Medcalf is a very easy-going and relaxing affair. Located on Exmouth Market, it is very popular and gets very busy during week nights. But on a Sunday, it takes on a different feel – quieter & calmer, I lingered over a roast dinner from 12-4pm. The dining room is long, and it’s not till I wandered towards the rear that I see some big wooden tables with long benches, with a glass barrier that opens into more tables outside. It was perfect for settling down with my Sunday papers. The menu is British – lots of meat and seasonal items. Cooking is skillful and accurate, which has earned them a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The Sunday lunch menu is slightly different from the regular dinner menu: there are more roast meats. Service was pleasant & casual. I started with some Scottish langoustines, served chilled with some watercress and lemon mayonnaise. This was quite refreshing but took a bit of time to get through as the crustaceans came whole, so it was tucking in with fingers. The meat was juicy, faintly sweet & buttery, although 1 was not as fresh as the other 3. Overall simple & enjoyable, a dish purely dependent on quality ingredients and well timed cooking. Only regret was not ordering a side of chips. The roast beef main was also good. Taken from the Sirloin, the meat was tender, medium rare but had to rely on the gravy for full flavour. Some roast potato and vegetables were decent but it was the giant Yorkshire pudding that really stole the show. It was joyfully crisp, well baked (I’ve had some thick, stodgy ones before – hateful!) and just delicious with the meat & gravy. To improve, they just need to get a more superior piece of meat. That said, this is still very satisfying for 13.95!It being a summer’s day, I finished with some honeycomb & caramel ice-cream, although I didn’t ask if it was bought in or home made. Nevertheless, it was good quality – smooth & creamy, interlace with just enough thick caramel and some honeycomb to provide a textural crunch. I enjoyed this visit for the good value comfort food with a simple & rustic feel to it.
Consistently good. When you’re in the mood for a well-priced steak dinner, this is the place. Quick service, and you can usually get a table during the week without a reservation.
