Clipstone is the sister restaurant of Michelin starred Portland. From the font, layout and contents of the menu to the ambience of the room it feels like it’s trying to recreate the magic of Portland at a more accessible price point. I arrived for lunch and was promptly and warmly greeted by front of the house and sat down. Throughout service staff was very friendly and attentive. Pork and duck pate (6/10) – The pate itself had a lean to fat ratio that I was very happy with and the pickled vegetables made for balanced bites and ensured I would not tire of it halfway through. I understand the desire for presentation but I think the audible crunch of a piece of toast is crucial to a pate. Presenting the pate on the bread makes the last few bites less satisfying. I think a bit of finishing salt would have elevated this as well. Snails with garlic and oil butter on toast (4/10) – Snails have a texture and leanness to them that makes them perfect to hold a fatty sauce. The sauce smelled promising, heavy with aromatics and garlic. I found it and the snails to be underseasoned and no relief of something such as acid came to cut through the fat. I also think given the amount of snails and sauce on the plate that another piece of toast would have been appropriate. The first piece of toast had absorbed much of the butter laden sauce as it could at the halfway mark. Poached egg, frites, mushroom (4/10) – Simple dish of shoestring fries and raw, thin mushrooms concealing a well poached egg. Beneath the egg a puree of mushrooms. The pure was well concentrated, easily being the best part of the dish. Again I found myself bored of this dish before I reached its end. Richness of the pure meets richness of egg, and a tad under salted for my taste. Beef, smoked walnut butter, pommes dauphinois, onion (2/10) – There was simply too of the walnut butter on the plate which in moderation would have been tasty. The beef was being drowned in it. The walnut was present and welcome in the butter while the feint smokiness added an initial point of interest. This dish also suffered the recurring theme of being unbalanced and light on a the salt. If the onions are sweeter or were pickled it would certainly help. On paper the food is very appealing here but it suffers from some recurring flaws. I came away from this meal feeling that this was an under-realised version of its sister and nothing more. instagram.com

I had the house pickles and ravioli, personally think they weren’t something significant, considered healthy, pretty food art, but I think they might be famous for other more exotic dishes on menu in which im not a fan of. Not too pricey too. huiminshere.wordpress.com
