By Koray HusseinBeing an insomniac is a bitch And by insomniac I mean an actual insomniac, not what some people tend to call themselves after a couple of nights with only five or six hours sleep.I mean getting three to four (sporadic) hours of sleep over three to four (sometimes more) days.I mean laying in bed staring up at the ceiling wondering how hard youd have to punch yourself in the face to knock yourself out whilst keeping as many teeth as you possibly can.I mean being so sleep deprived that what looks like a white wall to others slowly starts to fade to a pink and purple wall to you.I mean wandering the streets of Central London at 4am looking for a decent shot for the Maybe Its Because Instagram account and thinking to yourself This shit isnt normal. It gets to you and it sure as hell messes up your eating pattern. Whilst everybody else is eating their dinner youll find yourself scouring the pantry, looking for just a small snack thatll hold you off until your lunch in a couple of hours with dinner pencilled in for about 5am.Its a weird way of living and if youre lucky youll one day drift back into the normal zone and get your eight hours every night and if youre not lucky, youll be looking forward to the rare occasion when you manage to bang out four hours of sleep in a single day/night.For people like me, surfing the net and looking for a new all night eatery to visit in the dead of night is a regular occurrence. If I dont manage to find one then I start to look for the odd coffee spot which opens its doors a tad earlier than the others.A few weeks ago I found myself in this situation whilst a night shoot turned into an extremely early morning stroll. Id started in Tower Hill and had subconsciously made my way to the Covent Garden area before pulling out my phone to find somewhere within walking distance. Fortunately for me a place which was opening in fiften or so minutes in Fitzrovia popped right up at the top of my search. That place was Mortimers Caf. I made my way over, getting there a little earlier than expected and saw that they were already open.I waltzed in (Im surprisingly light on my feet) and was immediately greeted with a smile and a Good morning sir! Whatll it be?. I shot back with an equally polite hello and quickly scanned over their menu before plumping for a latte and a bacon and scrambled egg muffin.Seeing as there was only one other customer in the entire caf, it didnt take too long for my order to arrive and I was greeted with a healthy sized cup of coffee and (in my eyes at least) an egg that was so undercooked I was half expecting it to tell me to piss off as soon as I sunk my teeth in.In any normal circumstance, I would have probably asked for it to be cooked a little (read: a lot) longer but I was shattered and growing hungrier by the millisecond so I just closed up the muffin and took a bite.Surprisingly however, despite the half fluffy/half smoothie texture it was actually pretty damn tasty. It probably would have been more enjoyable had it been cooked for a little longer but honestly, I completely forgot about it after two bites and just enjoyed the meal. The coffee was your standard latte, with no real stand out qualities which was kind of a shame. Theres nothing like taking a sip of a coffee and being pleasantly surprised by the quality. This could have been any coffee from any greasy spoon. As it stands though, I doubt Ill be heading back to Mortimers any time soon, not with Soho Bikes, Kaffeine and one of my personal favourites, Daisy Green just a short walk away.If you want to see our other non-food related reviews and features please visit our site. maybeldner.com
