Always worth a visit. Sat in the Garden in a patch of sunshine and enjoyed a surprisingly tasty French Kiss! (Cocktail) with my partner. Happy hour from 4.30 all good. Staff upbeat and friendly. Squid & Salad with raw cougette and Teriyaki was lush.So nice to have quiet outside space in the middle of town.

It took two years but I finally completed the cafe tour of Forest Hill when I stepped into Canvas and Cream. Why it took so long, I don’t know – maybe it was because I wanted so badly for it to be good. Sold as a cafe and gallery, it is neatly decorated and furnished with a feel I have only seen once before at Brunswick House but that has the advantage of being a quasi showroom for the attached antique store, Lassco. At C&C, you get the feeling that this hodgepodge of furniture and furnishings has been meticulously thought out and that the fact the table had different styles of chairs was indeed intentional – and it worked. Settling in for a Sunday brunch, the menu read like a cure for a hangover with your usual suspects being prevalent. Full English, Salmon Royale, French Toast all sounded dreamy on paper and exactly what was needed to do the meal justice – it was brunch after all. We settled for the smoked haddock kedgree and the berries, creme fraiche & maple syrup American pancakes which were both lovely. Simple and completely satisfying, what the dishes lacked in style it makes up for by just being tasty and hearty – attributes which I’m sure most would find of more interest. Meal done, a satisfied pat of the stomach and a causal stroll around the gallery later, I walked out into beaming sunlight comforted that I now knew C&C was as good as I’d hoped. A return will be more than likely. Also follow me on Twitter @annixontong and on Instagram @ks_ate_here. wetrykai.wordpress.com
