If ever there was an institution in Forest Hill, Sugar Mountain must surely be it. Over the years, it has firmly entrenched itself into the local community and has become the place of dreams of so many childhoods. All you need to do is walk in to understand why; it’s akin to walking into the private library of Willy Wonka with wall upon wall decorated with sweets of every variety. I’ll admit I don’t have the strongest sweet tooth but even I can’t help but pay Pauline, Sugar Mountain’s curator, a frequent visit if only to take a trip down memory lane and relive simpler days by discovering a sweet I had long forgotten about. For me, there are few better ways to spend a day in Forest Hill than to sit in Sugar Mountain with an ice cream and just watch families visit come in and out – with my own family of course! Otherwise that’d just be weird…In a time when the sweet shops of old seem to number so few, Forest Hill should be thankful that in Sugar Mountain, they’ve retained a little gem in their neighbourhood.
